Another Ozzfest alumni passed, getting outlived by Ozzy. This guy toured more times than most bands, and to understand his involvement, you have to understand how he made his way there through me. We toured on Ozzfest in 2002, and he kept with it after.

As a journalist, I had been set to cover the Detroit show with a plus one pass. A few friends were battling over who wanted to go, and I casually remarked that whoever was in my car when it was time to go would be the one to go with me. This resulted in a half-Russian boxer breaking into my car, snuggling up to sleep, waiting for me to open my car in the morning, which made me think he was going with me to the show that day.

From there, we had no idea how things would change. I’d get pulled on stage by Rob Zombie, which opened the door for an invitation to join the tour. Mack expressed he wanted to go, too, and I made him go first to scout everything out, not believing the offer.

There’s too many antics to name. They started well before Ozzfest, as my brother was friends with both him and his cousin. Those guys were instrumental in getting me up and out of the house when I was learning how to walk again after my cliff diving accident, even if it was just to watch a movie.

He’d often be my scout, as I’d send him to find a way in the back door when traditional methods failed, sending him to be social for me, trusting him to find whoever we needed. He’d always work something out, finding the most interesting people, winding up in limos, even if I had to don a Stevie Knicks outfit to be a stylish limo driver for drunk people.

I’d do my journalism assignment, and I’d send him on the top secret missions. We traveled the country together, and he helped me move across the country to various cities. When others turned their backs, he’d ensure survival, not necessarily glamorous, but enough to not only live but have a story.
