Closely watching all the hurricane models, feeling confident in the weather reports that the real threat was going to be north of Tampa, we thought we were in the clear in Port Charlotte, FL. Little did I know then that the eye would stretch from my previous home in Fort Myers Beach to my current home near the Charlotte Harbor. That means, where I hunkered down with my father at my parent's house, almost on the border of Port Charlotte and North Port, wound up getting that northern and western eye wall, the brunt.

Luckily, I was a Girl Scout, so I know to be prepared. When we realized it was too late to head north, with reports pouring in about how I-4 and all the Tampa traffic was already at a standstill, not wanting to have to ride the storm out in a car stuck on the highway, I tried my best to gather up the standard supplies like water and extra batteries. Truth be told, I already had a lot on hand from it being hurricane season.

That's almost as comforting as noticing that the slider doors and windows are breathing, moving back and forth like lungs, swaying with the air, threatening to break open. That hammers home why they say don't stay near any doors or windows, as you never know when they will shatter open.

They closed down I-75 both directions, as well as the Punta Gorda bridge, and the Sanibel Causeway simply got taken out by the storm. That makes travel a little tricky, especially when combined with all the downed wires. It makes you question whether those wires are safe to drive over, or will you get shocked with a new hairstyle that makes your hair stand straight up on edge if you can live through it?

Oh, my other new favorite is guess which animal will try to come through the hole in the wall or the ceiling. This one I discovered yesterday when the birds were eyeing up the hole in my pool cage, thinking that might offer a more sheltered nesting area than the trees that were blown away. Just when I was worried about how the birds would fare with my cat, I saw a grandpa opossum waddling up on the pool cage, sticking his snout down the hole like he wanted to jump down and call that his new home.

Probably the best hurricane game to play is called island rescue. That's when you try to help save the people on the islands that cannot drive over the crumbled bridges. Hope you have a fleet of boats.

Being disconnected from the internet, it's only when the phone starts working that family explains the first place I worked in Florida when I was 18 just washed into the Gulf. Junkanoo's, Lighthouse Grill and Anthony's, a staple on the beach through all the years, is simply gone off of Google Earth. My buddy had been craving their chicken Florida, which was my favorite orange pasta sauce over coconut chicken, loaded with fruit, one of the best dishes ever, but that's just not possible to get ever again.

A former resident of Fort Myers Beach, we decided to move inland after hurricane Charley ripped the roof off the condo, filled it with water, and slammed the roof back down. Port Charlotte seemed a little more protected, and looking at some of the images now after, maybe not a bad choice after all.
