I can picture back more than twenty years ago at this point, racing into my duplex in Hillsdale, Michigan, hoping that I was not running late for my interview with Dani Filth from Cradle of Filth back in 2001. It was a phone interview back then, not face-to-face, and I wouldn't have the pleasure of watching them until a couple of years later, when they were touring on Ozzfest the year after I had toured on that same tour. Picture me working, at the time I interviewed Dani, at the Hillsdale Daily News, which still printed quotes from the Bible at the top of the newspaper pages, before either of us had thought we'd be on Ozzfest.

What stuck with me the most through the years was Dani and I talking about his horror movies, as that was before I would move to New Orleans and write my first series of movies. Back then, being young and impressionable, making movies seemed like there was still magic involved in the process, my mind insisting it must be more complex than it really is, just amazed to hear Dani talk about horror stuff. When I was finally able to see Cradle of Filth live for the first time on Ozzfest, I loved that they took more of the senses into consideration in their stage show, adding aerial acrobatics and other fun showmanship touches.
Lo que más se me quedó grabado a lo largo de los años fue que Dani y yo habláramos de sus películas de terror, ya que eso fue antes de mudarme a Nueva Orleans y escribir mi primera serie de películas. If you've never seen Cradle of Filth, you really need to, as they do strive to put on a show, with this particular one featuring characters such as one of my personal favorites from Hellraiser: Pinhead. It's the perfect band to see for Halloween, so when I saw they were actually in the country and coming to the area, it was for sure on my hitlist of shows to see, as it oozes autumn with horror throwbacks with a twist. If you get the chance, this is a tour to see, not only for Cradle of Filth, but for all the other bands as well.

Dualing it out with the UK band for co-headliner, another Ozzfest alumni boasting eight years of Ozzfest touring between his two bands of Coal Chamber and Devildriver, Dez for sure has stories he can't tell. Devildriver is always a fun time, as Dez is such a fun frontman to watch first of all, and he always surrounds himself with such amazing musicians, as he's been around long enough to be able to have his pick of the litter, seeing so many talented people in his years of touring. Not only is the music on point, but the stage show again is packed with action that makes your head go back and forth.
Haciendo dúo con la banda del Reino Unido como co-cabeza de cartel, otro ex alumno del Ozzfest que cuenta con ocho años de gira por el Ozzfest entre sus dos bandas de Coal Chamber y Devildriver, Dez seguro que tiene historias que no puede contar. It doesn't matter if you are left, right, front or back, there's something for you to see even if you're sitting on the sidelines, as there's multiple LED displays, not only on the stage, but there's walls with the camera trying to follow along with the band, illuminating the entire Ranch for people to see no matter what direction they are looking practically. With Devildriver commanding the stage, the moshpit erupts, people pulling off some martial arts moves like they're in ninja training or something. At the back of the pit, there's a painted faced demon with curled horns watching over the fallen.

Dez may have been on Ozzfest before me, but when I first met him touring with Coal Chamber and Drowning Pool, I had no idea I'd be on Ozzfest and there when they found Dave Williams' body. Dez has always been cool every time I have covered him, and it took me a while to remember him touring in Coal Chamber with a band called Medication, which featured not only the lead singer of Ugly Kid Joe, but another guy who people remembered more from Machine Head, a guy named Logan Mader. Fastforward from then to now, and here's Logan on stage opening for Dez yet again in another band: Savage Existence.

The second I walked into the Ranch in Fort Myers, I saw him whipping his dreadlocks around on stage. Maybe his dreads remind me of my brother's dreads, or maybe I just remember Logan and Whitfield teaching me this hi-lo game I believe they learned from the guys in Pantera if I recall, but it was exciting to see Logan on stage unexpectedly, knowing exactly who he was from far away. Maybe it's this like ex-Machine Head bonding that's a little strange to try to explain, but I will just for fun.

I met Logan a few years before I met Tony Costanza, who was the first drummer for Machine Head, a guy who became a very close friend of mine for the last 16 years of his life. Before he died, he told me about growing up with one of his very good friends who had not only also been in Machine Head, but he had been in this band called Ill Nino, a band I had toured with on Ozzfest back in 2002. At first, I thought I surely must've met Ahrue Luster then, but we figured out he joined the band after that tour.
Conocí a Logan unos años antes de conocer a Tony Costanza, que fue el primer baterista de Machine Head, un tipo que se convirtió en un amigo cercano mío durante los últimos 16 años de su vida. Ahrue now has a new band called Lions at the Gate, which will be coming to St. Petersburg, Florida, for the final stop of their tour on October 29, 2023, at Janus Live. This is a band with a couple of former Ill Nino members, specifically Cristian Machado and Diego Verduzco. The founding member of Ill Nino, Dave Chavarri, who some might recall was originally in a band called Pro-Pain, was erupting the stage with a new style to the Ill Nino show, which featured not one, but three drummers.

When they cleared the stage for the drum solo, that's when you could really appreciate what they were bringing to the table to totally transform the sound of the band in the best way possible. Summoning that tribal element, getting more organic with the hand drumming, that's the wild flare of the primal urges. Drumming can control the heartbeat, making it speed up or slow down, literally controlling that fight or flight button deep inside of the body, so imagine that controlling an entire crowd of people.
Cuando despejaron el escenario para el solo de batería, fue cuando realmente se podía apreciar lo que estaban trayendo a la mesa para transformar totalmente el sonido de la banda de la mejor manera posible. It was great to see Lazaro Pina still staying strong on the bass with Dave. Though the sound may have changed, I can honestly say it has matured like a fine wine. It's truly better than ever with heavy drums that harken back to the natives with the primal urge to simply stay off the food chain by predators.

It brought an element I had never heard with the band in prior configurations, and I really enjoyed it. You may, too, so be sure to catch this tour while you can. Be sure to check out the freshmen on the tour called Black Satellite, as these are New York punk rockers that can bring the mosh pit as hard as the others on the tour, handpicked as one that is sure to delight and has a sound mature enough to hang with the veterans of the metal and rock scene, as they can have their choice of the best bands out there.

There's something cute about the band, like you want to get close and check them out like a new puppy, but their spikes and rambunctious energy remind you that they might be young, but they play rough. Just like puppies and kittens have sharp teeth that have not been dulled yet and razor claws, you might be a little roughed up trying to hang with Black Satellite's mosh pit, as they will get the energy swirling. What looks like a cute chick with a mohawk just might be the one to kick your butt at the show, so just be forewarned when the moshpit breaks out when you're least expecting it.
Hay algo lindo en la banda, como si quisieras acercarte y verlos como un cachorro nuevo, pero sus picos y su energía bulliciosa te recuerdan que pueden ser jóvenes, pero juegan duro.
