Veteran Commits Suicide: Veterana se suicida

Unfortunately these days, a veteran committing suicide is not uncommon.  All I can do to bring awareness to this situation is to tell my story of how this topic touched me.  Through awareness, maybe we can find some sort of viable solution to prevent this from happening to others at the rate it currently affects vets.

Desafortunadamente, en estos días, no es raro que un veterano se suicide.  Todo lo que puedo hacer para crear conciencia sobre esta situación es contar mi historia de cómo este tema me conmovió.  A través de la concienciación, tal vez podamos encontrar algún tipo de solución viable para evitar que esto le suceda a otros al ritmo que afecta actualmente a los veterinarios.

I received the news last night.  The soldier's daughter's name showed up on my phone, and as soon as I saw that she was reaching out to me, I knew something must be wrong.  I read her words in disbelief.

Recibí la noticia anoche.  El nombre de la hija del soldado apareció en mi teléfono, y tan pronto como vi que se estaba comunicando conmigo, supe que algo debía estar mal.  Leí sus palabras con incredulidad.

Thing is, he called me last week and asked me, "are you ready to get married yet?"  I thought he was joking.  I had been feeling down in the dumps when he called, as I had just received my updated mortgage payment that had doubled due to insurance, even though my house is still not livable after being hit by the hurricane, so I spilled my drama to him, as he tried to cheer me up a bit about it.

La cosa es que me llamó la semana pasada y me preguntó: "¿Ya estás lista para casarte?"  Pensé que estaba bromeando.  Me había estado sintiendo deprimida cuando me llamó, ya que acababa de recibir el pago actualizado de mi hipoteca que se había duplicado debido al seguro, a pesar de que mi casa todavía no es habitable después de haber sido golpeada por el huracán, así que le conté mi drama, mientras trataba de animarme un poco al respecto.

The topic of marriage had come up the last time he came to see me in Florida, before Hurricane Ian, when I met his daughters for the first time.  He had joked then that if we were to get married, I would be entitled to benefits like health insurance and a discount of my house taxes, as he was a disabled veteran.  These were all very attractive options and reasons to get married, but he lived on the other side of the country from me, where his daughters were still going to school at the time.

His big thing was not wanting to move away from his daughters.  He wanted to be there for them, especially while they were in school.  Making it clear that he was not going to make any moves before they graduated, he joked that maybe after that point, we could get married, just see how things go.

Lo suyo era no querer alejarse de sus hijas.  Quería estar ahí para ellos, especialmente mientras estaban en la escuela.  Dejando en claro que no iba a hacer ningún movimiento antes de que se graduaran, bromeó diciendo que tal vez después de ese punto, podríamos casarnos, solo ver cómo van las cosas.

When he called last week, announcing that he was ready to get married, I thought it was a joke, but it was really a cry for help.  He wanted my attention, but he wouldn't tell me why.  I tried to ask, but everything was cryptic, with him asking, "haven't you been paying attention to my Facebook posts?"

Cuando me llamó la semana pasada, anunciando que estaba listo para casarse, pensé que era una broma, pero en realidad era un grito de ayuda.  Quería mi atención, pero no me decía por qué.  Traté de preguntar, pero todo era críptico, y él preguntó: "¿No has estado prestando atención a mis publicaciones de Facebook?"

Admitting that I have not been on social media much, I asked him what was going on, but he wouldn't tell me much.  He said that he had tried calling the VA and the veteran suicide line, but it was busy.  Begging him to tell me what was going on, he refused to elaborate and simply hung up on me instead.

That was the last conversation.  He was merely directing me to watch his demise on Facebook.  It didn't matter how many times I called, texted or tried to send messages to make him smile.  He wouldn't respond.

His daughter said she had been there when I tried calling him one time, but, "there was so much going on, he couldn't answer the phone."  What was going on, I couldn't tell you.  As much as I wanted to ask her the details, I couldn't risk her fragile state with my stupid curiosity, so it's still a mystery to me.

She knew I tried to reach out, so she let me know that he committed suicide.  That's why he wasn't responding any more.  As much as I wanted to hug her, she's on the other side of the country.

Instead, I did what I could, making sure she knew about veteran benefits, and texting her the link to where she could apply for funeral assistance.  As I had helped plan my uncle's unexpected funeral on a budget, I pointed her to places like Walmart and Amazon, where she could find urns and cremation jewelry cheaper than most funeral homes.  I asked her if there was anything she needed to let me know.

The downward spiral is laid out on his social media.  Though there are a few clues, there's no definite answers as to what was going through his head or why he did it.  He posted his history that he sent to the VA to get disability, to let people know about his PTSD and things he had been going through.

He was literally screaming for help online.  His daughter could be heard pleading, "we're trying to get you help."  What had been causing this downward spiral and call for help still remains a mystery.

The cause doesn't really matter.  The fact that he kept calling for help and couldn't get it is what matters.  He literally called me, only to push me away, wanting me to merely watch from afar helpless.

I tried calling.  I tried texting.  If he refused to respond, what could I have done?

From Florida to Ohio is a haul, especially when you don't have an exact address, only the city and state.  I keep trying to piece together his cryptic messages, recalling his manic state.  Seeing evidence of his daughter trying to help, even his ex, is there anything that anyone could have done to prevent this?

Recall him saying that he had shut a lot of people out and didn't like to let new people in.  He said he only felt comfortable talking to other veterans.  He didn't mind talking to me though, because he was comfortable with me from his past, even though it'd been a while, as he was married 20 years or so.

He spilled secrets.  Let him vent.  Was his suicide inevitable?

Over the course of a couple decades, note evidence of where PTSD had gotten the best of him at times.  His hair had gone from dark to a little salty, but he held a soldier's physique, proud to be able to bust out a number of pushups at any given time.  He'd take on younger kids in physical challenges just to show them up, which you couldn't help but giggle at when others were not looking.

Physical fitness does not show the deterioration happening on the inside.  Things like depression and PTSD are not always evident to people, especially when a soldier is used to masking it.  Soldiers do not like to look weak, so they can become very skilled at hiding what might be hurting them inside.

For my soldier, it's too late.  Don't make that mistake.  Do what you can when you can and hope it's enough, as there's no guarantee that you can stop it, but all you can do is try to prevent it.

Suicides Increase with Insurance Rates: Los suicidios aumentan con las tarifas de los seguros

Speaking with a doctor in North Port, FL, earlier this month, he mentioned all of his patients that day were people who had been recently priced out of their homes.  They were feeling helpless, desperate, and many of them were forced into that situation after Hurricane Ian.  The most recent wave of insurance increases recently hit those residents in Southwest Florida, causing them to flock to the doctor depressed.

Though the hurricane hit in September 2022, the FEMA maps changed effectively in December 2022, resulting in many residents who were not in flood zones before the hurricane that are now forced to pay flood insurance, or else they face repercussions from their homeowner's insurance and mortgage provider.  Beyond some residents being forced to pay flood insurance unexpectedly, insurance rates in the area have at least doubled, with one resident saying she paid around $3800 before the hurricane, which is now nearly $8000 after the hurricane, not including her newly required flood insurance, a couple grand more.  When she bought her house in December 2018, her mortgage and escrow payments were a little over $700, and her most recent bill is now more than $1600 a month, more than double from 2018.

This resident, who preferred to stay anonymous, said she wants to sell her house, as she cannot afford the new payment; however, she is forced to continue to fight with the insurance company simply to make her house livable again.  Now in year two after the hurricane, she is still in litigation, which prevents her from selling her house, and as the insurance company deemed it uninhabitable, she cannot live in her house, cannot rent it out, cannot sell it, and is forced to pay to live elsewhere while still struggling to pay for her home that she cannot live in, adding to feelings of hopelessness and despair.  Unfortunately, many Southwest Florida residents are still in similar situations, as insurance companies drag their feet, knowing that FEMA will not be issuing any more funds for that disaster after March.

These insurance rate hikes are not isolated to Southwest Florida, as many insurance companies have raised their rates throughout the entire state of Florida, with some folding all together, leaving residents with no more homeowner's insurance, being forced to pay higher rates at other companies.  Some insurance providers have required flood insurance for all residents of Florida, regardless of flood zone.  This has resulted in many residents being angry: "if we didn't flood in the last hurricane, why pay now?"

Not surprisingly, this has led to a mass Florida exodus, where even longtime residents are flocking out of the state in search of lower insurance rates and cost of living elsewhere.  However, in the case of those who are still stuck in litigation, being forced to pay for their homes as well as to live elsewhere while they fight to make their house livable again, many have their hands tied, unable to make a move.  These are the people with the highest risk of suicide, as they feel stuck, forced into a situation they didn't want to be in, with no timeline of when it will end, as insurance companies continue to play stall tactics.

One resident is waiting for help from FEMA, who is waiting for her insurance company to respond to their request.  FEMA told her to contact the Florida Bar Association, so she did.  Speaking with the Florida Bar Association, as well as her lawyer, everyone is waiting on the insurance company.  Who can force the hand of the insurance company to respond, or do they simply have carte blanche to do as they want, knowing that they are purposely stalling with the approaching FEMA deadline?

This is considered duress by forcing people into mental anguish.  It creates despair, feelings of helplessness, and ultimately, suicidal tendencies.  If insurance delays are not worth your loved ones committing suicide over, then who is going to step in to help this situation from getting worse?

One single female resident said her insurance company told her water had been driven into her walls and ceilings, and they arranged for a mold remediation company to remove her walls and ceilings, assuring her that her house could be fixed in a few weeks.  After the remediation company removed her walls and ceilings, as greenlighted by her insurance company, her adjuster called to tell her that she's not getting any more money, that she better plan to whore herself out and live in the homeless shelter to get her house fixed.  Livid, she called her insurance company, only to hear that they had no record of the call, as the adjuster called from their cell, and in fact, that adjuster no longer worked for the company, nor was his agency any longer a contractor for the insurance company, resulting in her retaining an attorney.

Another resident recalled how the insurance company kept switching adjusters, which limited any forward motion, as insurance companies can switch adjusters each day.  Each adjuster would have a delay tactic, which varied from a family member dying, to the adjuster having COVID, to now various family members had COVID and they had to care for them, and just about any excuse for people to be out of the office and not returning phone calls as they should.  After talking with many area residents, these tactics were not used at just one company, but many.

There are games that are played like this behind the scenes, created to make people feel sorry for their adjuster and the insurance company, not realizing that this is simply a delay tactic for them paying.  Of course, there are even more games played by contractors, as many residents have horror stories of hiring out of the area contractors who do a less than stellar job and then are nowhere to be found.  Let's not mention the increase of home thefts from various adjusters and contractors having access to houses, as the local news stations have reported a number of cases not just in places like Fort Myers Beach, but the less talked about areas like Port Charlotte, North Port, and Punta Gorda, who also got hit hard by Ian.

Hurricane Ian might not be the hot topic in the news these days, but residents who were hit by the storm continue to struggle to recover.  Being walloped by insurance rates that more than doubled in some areas, as well as newly required flood insurance for many residents, has literally priced many people out of their homes, resulting in the most inventory on the real estate market since 2019.  The height of prices was in June 2022, with a steady bell curve downward since, officially making this area a buyer's market.

Area residents wonder if they can restrict how much property taxes increase each year for homeowners, why can't there by a limit of how much insurance rates increase each year?  With many people facing more than double their monthly living expenses, people want to leave.  For those still stuck fighting with insurance, unable to sell, rent, or live in their houses, being forced to pay to live elsewhere in addition to their normal living expenses, those feelings of desperation can turn into suicidal tendencies, which increases the risk while driving, as people might purposely swerve to cause accidents, hoping to end it.

Los residentes del área se preguntan si pueden restringir cuánto aumentan los impuestos a la propiedad cada año para los propietarios de viviendas, ¿por qué no puede alguien limitar cuánto aumentan las tarifas de seguro cada año?  Dado que muchas personas se enfrentan a más del doble de sus gastos de manutención mensuales, la gente quiere irse.  Para aquellos que todavía están atrapados luchando con el seguro, incapaces de vender, alquilar o vivir en sus casas, viéndose obligados a pagar para vivir en otro lugar además de sus gastos de vida normales, esos sentimientos de desesperación pueden convertirse en suicidios lo que aumenta el riesgo mientras se conduce, ya que las personas pueden desviarse deliberadamente para causar accidentes, con la esperanza de acabar con él.
