While filming the latest movie project, “Demons Among Us.” music became necessary to bridge scenes together. At first, I was amazed by how many bands were willing to be part of the movie project, but it soon turned out that most musicians had an ulterior motive. When you’re dealing with a movie that has a zero budget, I could not afford to cut in managers and people of people who want to have their hands out for something that has a zero budget, which means nobody’s getting paid when it’s a zero budget.

Thus, out of sheer necessity, with the music budget being zero as well, it was important to create our own music for the movie. As thankful as I was that people expressed interest in the project, I could not afford to have everyone involved that wanted to be involved when there’s a zero budget. There’s a huge difference in people who want to be involved just for the fun of it versus people who think they’re gonna make a million off of something that has zero being invested into it.

Oh, I had huge visions of what I wanted, big vision boards of what I expected, but the reality was the budget was not providing much of anything for those dreams to happen. It’s not like I had a huge million dollar recording studio to record with, so we used what was available. In some cases, we recorded on the beach, other cases we recorded in the living room, and even in the kitchen, just capturing sounds of our music.

It was like being in the 80s, not quite as low budget as just hitting record on the tape player like we did back in the day, but it was just about on par with the quality level. Many of my professional musician friends looked at me like I was crazy, saying that it needed to be perfected by all these pro tools, and what not, but that was not the point. Originally, I had not started out with the idea of country music, actually started with the idea of heavy metal, but when the heavy metal musicians were not available, it was a country musician and a Jamaican Rasta who was available.

Had I been up in Detroit, I’m sure I would’ve found a plethora of metal musicians willing to throw down for this project, even had many calling to quiz me up about it. However, I was not in Michigan. I was in Florida, which limited who was around.

However, that left me with the true musicians that make music just for the fun of making music. Even though there were a few different musicians interested, the bottom line of who is involved in a project boils down to who actually shows up to play.

In this case, while making the music for the movie soundtrack of “Demons Among Us,” it came down to Jamaican Rasta Ras Shomari and Memphis’ finest Joshua Brian Knight, as well as my brother and my longtime friend Sheena Ann. In some cases, I’m merely singing as people drummed . In other cases, I would sing as people strummed.

The entire soundtrack was basically recorded off of various jam sessions. Somewhere in a basement in Michigan, some were in a living room in Sarasota, others were on the beach in Nokomis, and some were even at the kitchen table in North Port. The low budget recording was done on various devices, from the cell phones, to video cameras and IPad.

Originally recorded as mere song ideas, with the idea that other musicians would join in later, one of the actors insisted that we keep it as is. Steven Moore, who plays Cuddles and Dr. Domento, not only in “Demons Among Us,” but also in the sister screenplay “Black Market Doctor,” would not hear of changing a thing. “It sounds so twisted and demented with it being so raw like that, you have to keep it just like it is now,” explaining that overproduction would ruin the effect.

Having more of a mountain feel, people have classified the music as everything from world music, as there is a Jamaican involved, to country and Bluegrass. I was never looking to classify the genre, as it was just supposed to be for a movie. I didn’t expect our video “Amputation Amongst Friends” to have more than 1500 views in the first week or to win any awards.

When other songs from the soundtrack started winning awards, it was equally as surprising. The movie has not even premiered, but each of the songs serve as like a mini-trailer for the movie, as scenes from the movie are used for each of the music videos. While many of the songs are available on YouTube, there are a couple that have been held, such as the zombie video that premiered at Shock Stock in Canada.

Hearing that people actually fought to air my video was humbling. Although, it was fantastic to find people that shared my artistic vision and got my message loud and clear. While some people felt that my video was too shocking to show to the general public, others agreed that since I used all natural props, zero budget, that it was worth showing, and I’m so glad they did.

Karen and Kevin may have gotten an unexpected eye full, causing them to lurch back with wide open eyes. I couldn’t help but smile like a Cheshire cat and laugh. I had to give them a copy of “Black Market Doctor,” just to hammer home that shock expectation a little bit more.

Some of the songs originally slated for “Demons Among Us” are being held for the “Black Market Doctor” soundtrack. There’s more budget needed to create that production, so it’s on hold until money starts raining for the proper props and whatnot needed. In the meantime, it’s switching gears to a completely different project.

Some people may have looked past my “Birds of Baseball” screenplay for children, but that is going to be blown up more. Music ideas are being thrown around for that film production, as well as a sequel to it is in the works. That is a secret project not talked about much for a reason, as there’s a lot of tiptoeing between legality that needs to be done with that project more than others.

I’m not at liberty to discuss who or what influenced that project, but I can say that the project was built by request. I’m not normally known for doing children’s projects, so for me, this is more of a challenge than horror films. There’s a lot of nondisclosure agreements and what not involved with this project, so there’s a lot more legal legwork than people would even remotely realize.

I am well aware that it is usually unheard of to go from a horror project that is shocking and outlandish to some thing created for children that is also in Spanish. In all fairness, the baseball project came before the horror project as far as winning awards is concerned, but the horror movie series first began in 2014, making it a little older than the baseball projects. It’s a decade after the first book of the Murder House series was published, but film production is just beginning on that series, so who knows how long the baseball projects will take to see the light of day.

I will credit one of the professional baseball players that I used to work with as being a motivating inspiration for making the film projects. What good is it to write books when everybody is watching movies? Well, I guess it’s just time to make some movies.

The turning point for me was getting attacked on Facebook live. A lot of people don’t realize that my jaw was dislocated, and my neck was snapped, that I even was temporarily paralyzed. When I was healing from that, I could not sing, and I cried, thinking of all the times that I could have recorded my voice and people wouldn’t let me, realizing I might not get the chance again.

Very few people actually checked in to see how I healed up from the attack, which was very upsetting. Of course, having my cliff diving accident at 19, being told I’d never walk again when I was that young, I was very used to people turning their backs on me when I was hurt, being in a wheelchair, being told that I never walk again, only to prove them all wrong.

Being attacked with merely a reminder that we are born in this world alone, and we will die in this world alone. Whatever motivation we have on the planet, we better make the most of it. Sick of caring what people thought, sick of people telling me no, I pushed forward and did what I wanted to do, as that’s the vision I had while alive.

Not everybody gets it, and not everybody has to, as it’s not meant for everyone. Staying true to my own form, I have always crossed genres, and I have always crossed boundaries that normal people do not. As I mentioned to horror actor Bill Moseley, I am one of those oddballs that can cross from music and entertainment to sports, the politics of working on Capitol Hill, the demands of the medical field and still be trusted with real estate, one of the biggest investments people make in their lives.

Let’s just say there’s a reason for my mystery, and if I choose to share glimpses of my life in my work, well you can put whatever pieces together as you see fit and still not have the whole story.
