For my birthday, I was lucky enough for my friend to insist that I go see Metallica in Nashville. Calling up one of the alumni from Ozzfest 2002 to attend with Me, she and I set sail from Florida to go on an adventure through the mountains to go see Pantera, Limp Bizkit, Ice Nine Kills, Suicidal Tendencies, and Metallica. Of course, we had to make some nature stops along the way to chase some waterfalls and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery, but the real Rock was at the concert at Nissan Stadium.

Let’s start with Ice Nine Kills. The last time I covered that band in Cleveland, it was a completely different sound and show. Yes, there was still a horror theme, but Art the Clown had not yet joined that party, and with his addition, I can only say good things.

Maybe it’s something to do with spending too much time at the carnival, actually meeting these clowns that are way more twisted than what people would realize, and realizing that these clowns actually exist in the planet. While some people might be thinking of Pennywise from It, or that clown crisis of a few years back where nobody could dress up like a clown for Halloween, I am more terrorized by the actual clowns I have met on the carnival, talking with them, realizing the dark things they have in their minds. Their sound just perfectly captures that Terrorizer.

I mean, it took me a while to get it. I grew up listening to songs like “Captain Stupid,”thinking it was all awesome, but I didn’t really understand their whole connection to surfing, skateboarding, and all that back in the day. I didn’t fully understand how they got their start in California, as I just heard their songs in Michigan growing up, thinking it was a pretty cool sound, and it wasn’t until I was older that I understood more of why people in California revere them so much.

Yes, this is coming from the Chick who randomly walked up to Robert Trujillo in Denver, having no clue who he was, talking to him like a dip shit. I saw the amusement on his face as he just let me ramble on, not even telling me who he was for a long while. Once he clued me in, I was so embarrassed, I had to just straight up leave, and the whole rest of the time on Tour, he would not let me live it down, as every time I seen him, he would make funny faces at me to make me laugh, usually when I was in a hurry, not paying attention, not in the least expecting it, which would just be a bright spot in my day, because you can’t help but laugh.

When they announced that he was joining Metallica, I was so excited, as there’s really nobody better to join that band. With him, leaving suicidal tendencies, that only opened up the opportunity for his son to join that band. Can you imagine being his son, stepping into his father’s shoes, and just extending his legacy while securing his own?

The only thing better would’ve been if they added Infectious Grooves also onto the bill, but I’m sure that would’ve been a lot on all the guys. Luckily, I was able to catch them at the Orion festival that Metallica threw at Belle Isle in Detroit a few years back. Honestly, I was hoping that Season 72 would’ve been like that, where they brought in all their cool cars, Kirk’s horror memorabilia, and all sorts of craziness, but there was so much, it would just be impossible to tour the whole country with all their toys like that, but it was sweet.

So, a true story is that the only concert I have ever camped out for tickets for was actually Limp Bizkit with Eminem in Detroit. I had not honestly planned to camp out for said concert, but my friend, who happened to be the same friend who gave me the tickets for my birthday, really wanted to go. As noted, when she wants to do something, we do it.

Maybe it’s because I have not seen the band since then, as there has been a lot of pent-up frustration of people wanting to see Limp Bizkit, or maybe it’s the fact that he had that home-field advantage since he’s living in Franklin, Tennessee. Whether it was because Fred‘s mom was in the audience, or whatever the reason, they did bring it. I was honestly shocked at how much they sucked me in, but I shouldn’t have been, as I know other songs.

The band I have grown the closest to since touring on Ozzfest is definitely hands-down Pantera. The first time I met Phil Anselmo, he told me I was always welcome back, which I thought he was just kinda like joking or something, but I truly have been blessed enough to be invited to so many of their events, from his haunted house, to all their friends shows, even living in NOLA. From Down and Superjoint Ritual, to Phil Anselmo and the illegals, I have seen so many different performances that I couldn’t wait to see how Zakk Wylde would fit into the mix.

Don’t get me wrong. I have covered Anthrax more than enough times to have massive respect for their drummer, and I definitely wanted to see how he would fit in as well. However, having toured with Zakk on Ozzfest, seeing him play for Black Label Society as well as Ozzy, I was curious to see how he would jive with Phil and Rex.

It’s like almost every time I walk in, I catch that eye contact. This time was no different. I don’t know how in a sea of M&Ms, someone on stage can pick out someone in a crowd, but he just has this ability somehow, every time, be it NOLA, DC, Toledo, or wherever.

When it comes to Metallica, Lars was definitely one of my first favorite drummers. I have already mentioned Robert Trey being awesome, and I will add that I almost feel a kinship with Kirk’s horror collection. Maybe it’s from having dated a professional athlete who literally refused to walk into my bedroom because of my zombie baby collection, or he straight up fled my house in a panic when he found out I had a Chucky doll, but I can definitely appreciate people who like horror after experiences like that with my collection.

My friend from Ozzfest, Michelle, inquired, “is it just me, or is James looking better with age?” The band is like a fine wine. They just keep getting better, and doing more things to blow people‘s minds for their amusement.

Honestly, I missed the media handouts that they had at the Orion festival, as they literally are responsible for me getting hooked on Kind bars. I did really enjoy running into James starting up a random race car at Orion, so I wish that they would’ve had more fun stuff like that, but otherwise I can’t really complain. If you have not seen Metallica, you probably want to do yourself a favor and just pick up a two show pass to check out this configuration while it’s still on the road.
