When you’re the black sheep of the family, there’s people you meet in life who treat you better than family, and Kristen Case was one of those people. Not just for me, but she had an extensive heart that welcomed even the most downtrodden, treating broke people the same as she treated millionaires. She opened her home for me and made me part of her family, but she saved many others in their time of need, as that’s how she was, like a stand-in mother or sister to many over the years, a rare treasure when you needed her.

Naturally beautiful, her daughter’s father used to brag how she could light up a room just by walking in, as she was day brightening. She was the type of gal that could help you forget about whatever troubles you were going through, usually having you laughing within a few moments. She had an infectious smile that you couldn’t help but smile along with.

Though she was born in Michigan, she found homes in Key West, FL, and later in California. Privately, she battled epilepsy, but she never let that hold her back, as she studied Marine Biology in the Florida Keys, before turning her focus towards nursing. Providing comfort with her warm smile in healthcare, she also held the spotlight as an entertainer in her younger years, skilled at captivating an audience.

So skilled at being in the spotlight, she influenced returning characters in my books. There’s too many stories to tell here, which is why she continues to grace the pages of my novels. First meeting her when I moved to Key West after touring on Ozzfest, during my first visit at their home, her young daughter asked if I would be their new nanny, surprising myself and her parents, but the suggestion became reality basically that first meeting.

Not having children of my own, watching Ryia and Amanda gave that sense of motherhood. Key West conchs grow up wise fast, and these girls were no exception, both being of sharp wit with a wisdom beyond their years. When the family relocated to California, I went out to make sure things were settled.

In California, John was born, Kristen’s only son. The three children survived their mother. Each of them have different personalities, but they all share Kristen’s charm and charisma.

Looking back, stories blossom in my mind like flowers, cherished memories. I will never forget that she opened her home to me after I was attacked in New Orleans, needing somewhere to flee to safety. She was a beautiful soul that will surely be missed by all who were lucky enough to have met her.

Her daughter shared the news of her passing. Kristen had gone sepsis. Infection ravaged her body so hard, it shut down her organs before anyone knew what happened.

By the time she was found, she had already passed. Medical professionals tried to bring her back, but it was too late. Infection, inflammation, and ultimately sepsis claimed her life before many knew she was even sick.

Her family may celebrate her birthday in October by remembering her. They plan to put her to peace in her favorite place in California. Her memory lives on in my books and in the hearts of her loved ones, but I am sure this is an angel that will watch over.
