It’s really hard to pick a favorite haunted house, as each of them have different pros and cons. Some bring in a variety show to really enhance that supernatural effect, while others realize simply on pop out, scares and animatronics that you do not expect to be moving. Whether you are a fan of traditional scares, or you like the new technology that enhances the old, there are a variety of haunted houses in southern Florida that are worth checking out.

Starting out further south, specifically in Miami South Beach, jungle Island gets transformed into Horrorland when the sun goes down. There are half a dozen different attractions in one, and they definitely bring a decent variety to the mix, only enhanced by the fact that you can continue to go in and out of your favorite attractions as long as it’s open that night. I’m like other haunted houses where you just get one entrance, having a wristband where you can go as many times as you like is a really cool way to make sure you get to see everything the haunted house has to offer.

There’s a not so scary section for kids, with lots of inflatables and lights to really capture their attention, but there’s also enough scares to lure in those adults to make them feel as if they were in the middle of the horror movie. When they have people dangling from the ceiling doing awesome aerobatic displays, you cannot help but feel scared in a different way, hoping they do not fall employment to their death in front of you. Watching a beautiful girl plunge herself onto a bed of nails, only to make sparks fly, you cannot help but wonder if this beautiful girl is simply going to get decapitated.

If you are on the East Coast, southern Florida’s best attraction on the Miami side is definitely Horrorland. You will not be disappointed, as you get so many attractions for one price that it just makes it worth going to. It is definitely worth the drive across Alligator Alley like we did.

On the West Coast of Florida, just a little more north in Tampa, Busch Gardens, transforms their roller coaster Haven into a nightmare scape at Howl-O-Scream. They also bring some variety shows to the table, and along with some breathtaking Ariel displays, they have zombie dancers, and an escape artist who gets put into a straight jacket and narrowly escapes the jaws of death. On certain days, they offer trick-or-treating for the children, but at night, Sesame Street closes, and only the stench of those green leftover diapers from Elmo‘s playland fills the air.

Of course, Busch Gardens has the added bonus of having awesome roller coasters that kicks up the G-Force action. If you’re not scared enough going through haunted houses, just hop on a roller coaster and feel as if you are going to plummet to your death at the top of a tower that rushes down to the ground, tipping you forward to see your demise. You can’t really go wrong when you’re combining roller coasters and haunted houses in my opinion.

Probably the most impressive thing about Busch Gardens this year is their music selection. Whoever curated the playlist needs some major props, as they are definitely catering to the rock scene by playing Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, Prodigy, and a lot of bands that are familiar to hardcore parents. Kick this up with a few nods to bondage and their haunted houses, and I will definitely recommend this to the adults, as it has enough of the trick-or-treat action to lure in the children, but the adults are definitely who is being catered to at this event.

Sure, if you wanna go Central, there’s Universal Studios, and everyone says they’re awesome, but their prices were just a little too high for us to include this year. Thus, we will save some money and venture more towards Dade City.

Screamageddon is the answer for multiple haunted houses in one location, and what makes them notable is the opportunity for people to join in. As a spectator, you can opt into the fund by getting a glow necklace that lets the performers know they can touch you and capture you, making you part of the haunted house attraction. This is probably one of the only events that I have found in South Florida that has this option, and it Harkens back to the old-school haunted houses before it was politically incorrect to touch anyone when doing a pop-out scare.

Having everything from a hayride to haunted houses and even a zombie shooting range, there’s all kinds of stuff to make it worthwhile to drive all the way to Dade City. Again, this one kicks it up a little bit more than the others with the touchy Feely aspects.

It’s definitely different from somebody just whispering in your ear unexpectedly, maybe even in a language you don’t even know, as opposed to people grabbing you, literally carrying you off, and locking you up, holding you hostage…

If the big attractions are not in your budget, there’s also a plentiful amount of neighborhood attractions throughout South Florida. Neighborhood pop-ups have become popular, such as the house on Montrose in Port Charlotte, who only asks for a donation of cat food to enter their haunted house.

When neighborhoods come together at Halloween, that only adds to the real effect of Halloween, which is bringing people together for the fun of scares in a safe environment. It brings us to the brink, leaving us on the edge, feeling as if we are goners, yet we still have the safety of knowing that we get to go home that night.

If you are not in South Florida, you know there’s haunted houses wherever you’re at this time of year, so just start looking around on places like Fear Finder and see what’s around. If you go up north, there’s all kinds of haunted prisons, and other attractions this time of year, so it’s just a matter of looking to see what scare is closest by you, and letting me know what you think is the best in your neighborhood.
