Have a I found a new favorite female lead singer? Oh, she’s up there for sure. There’s something to be said about a sultry
type of gypsy seductress that knows how to move her body when people are
watching that goes above and beyond the typical dance like nobody is watching
to the levels of using the body as if it is a lethal weapon that can not only
seduce but bring a man to ruin if wanted.

It all started with a typical sunshiny day at Disney
Springs, taking in all the Christmas decorations at the various Disney Resorts,
hopping on the monorail and flying in the sky to various locations like a
typical tourist. It’s a cute
juxtaposition to go from the happy go lucky vibes that Disney has to make
people smile to the dark metal vibe that makes people want to slam into each
other in a mosh pit at the House of Blues.
Then just walk out of the concert afterwards, get a waffle cone to lick
on the way to the car.
Todo comenzó con un típico día soleado en Disney Springs,
disfrutando de todas las decoraciones navideñas en los diversos resorts de
Disney, saltando en el monorriel y volando en el cielo a varios lugares como un
turista típico. Es una linda
yuxtaposición pasar de las vibraciones felices y afortunadas que Disney tiene
para hacer sonreír a la gente al ambiente de metal oscuro que hace que la gente
quiera chocar entre sí en un mosh pit en House of Blues. Luego, simplemente salga del concierto

Hopefully, I’m not the only one who finds that type of thing
humorous, but it was great. Out of four bands,
only one, P.O.D., a band I happened to tour with on Ozzfest 20 years ago, was
from America. Two of the bands were
Ukrainian, and one was from England, an international metal show not to be
missed, so if you have the chance to see the tour, you best plan on making your
way out to see it.
Con suerte, no soy el único que encuentra ese tipo de cosas
graciosas, pero fue genial. De cuatro
bandas, solo una, P.O.D., una banda con la que hice una gira en el Ozzfest hace
20 años, era de Estados Unidos. Dos de
las bandas eran ucranianas, y una era de Inglaterra, un espectáculo
internacional de metal que no debe perderse, así que si tienes la oportunidad

The thing that I like about international metal is the
symphonic sounds in it, as they are not afraid to riff a melodic beat that will
enchant you. It might be a faster beat
than expected, as it is metal after all, but the musicality of the metal is
noteworthy, not just play as fast as possible with no other point in mind. All of the bands were danceable, with people
making fun of me for zoning out in my own little world, dancing as if I did not
care who saw me, getting lost into the beats, being sure not to miss one with a
wiggle of some body part to indicate feeling it, but isn’t that what concerts
are for, to let loose a bit?
Lo que me gusta del metal internacional son los sonidos
sinfónicos que contiene, ya que no tienen miedo de riff un ritmo melódico que
te encantará. Puede ser un ritmo más
rápido de lo esperado, ya que es metal después de todo, pero la musicalidad del
metal es notable, no solo tocar lo más rápido posible sin otro punto en

It's way better than the typical 80’s aerobics, but just as
much calories burning when the bands demand that people run in the pit. Overall, each band was very commanding, and
the crowd very obliging. When one band
member lifted their arms to demonstrate clapping, the crowd followed suit no
problem.
Es mucho mejor que los típicos aeróbicos de los 80, pero
igual de calorías que se queman cuando las bandas exigen que la gente corra en
el foso. En general, cada banda fue muy
dominante, y la multitud muy servicial.

One band had the crowd separate like the colliding walls. Another band had crowd members grab friends
arm-in-arm and run in circles in the pit.
Other times were pure chaos with crowd surfers.

The first band was from the Ukraine, as was the last band,
creating a Ukrainian sandwich of sounds.
Space of Variations was surprisingly good; as in, I couldn’t believe
they were the opener and not later in the show.
They set the tone for the entire show in the best way possible with
great melodic metal that could be moshed around it and grooved to in the small
lil’ space allotted for the packed in crowd of people that are each eager to
get a little taste of what the other side of the globe has to offer musically.
La primera banda era de Ucrania, al igual que la última
banda, creando un sándwich ucraniano de sonidos. Space of Variations fue sorprendentemente
bueno; como en, no podía creer que fueran la apertura y no más tarde en el
espectáculo. Establecieron el tono para

Malevolence was the second band from England, also a great
sounding melodic metal tone to them that didn’t want to leave you standing
around like a herd of cattle. Commanding
the audience to move, there was a healthy energy in the air that seemed to be
contagious, like let’s move around a bit more.
It seemed like pretty much everyone at the show was up for having a good
time, sick of being cooped up for quarantine, and more than ready to let loose,
even if just to bop their bodies around a bit and dance.
Malevolence fue la segunda banda de Inglaterra, también un
gran sonido de metal melódico para ellos que no quería dejarte parado como una

By the time P.O.D. took the stage, the audience was more
than warmed up from moshing to two straight bands, overly eager to keep up the
wave of energy and crash into each other even more. Opening with “Here Comes The Boom,” actually,
with a little Snoop Dogg intro that made another photographer ask if he was
really hearing what he thought he was hearing, then the smashing sounds of the
boom. While the other photographer may
have doubted that it fit the band, I assured him that it did, as gangsta
respects gangsta, with Sonny having 31 years of performing under his belt with
Latin flare that most might not fully understand the way I do after not only
touring the country with them on Ozzfest in 2002, seeing them perform night
after night, followed by covering them on Uproar and other tours, watching him
whip those dreds, fueled by the sounds of his bandmates shredding with ease.

excitement of recognizing a face from back in the day. Though I did not get a chance to say hi
privately, it’s that fun few seconds of is that who I think it is, oh you know
it is, and a smile of how have you been?

It’s always fun to dance around to music that you know
backwards, forwards, front to back.
Groove about like it’s second nature and just enjoy it. No matter if you’ve heard the song a million
times, it’s always so much more special when you see a band in person and share
that moment in time with them.
Siempre es divertido bailar al ritmo de la música que conoces
al revés, adelante, de adelante hacia atrás.
Groove como si fuera una segunda naturaleza y simplemente

Speaking of special, hearing the heartbreaking tales from
Jinjer of how they lost their house a couple times in ten years, it’s amazing
that they were able to bring their music across the ocean for us to enjoy, and
I’m glad they were able to bring over a fellow band from their country for us
to experience as well. Having gone
through Hurricane Ian, with people describe the destruction as being like a
warzone, I can only extrapolate that experience to begin to imagine what it
might have been like for them to go through, endure, soldier onward, picking up
the pieces from destruction not once, but twice! Down here in Port Charlotte and North Port,
there’s a huge Ukrainian, Polish and Russian community, but they all get along
here, commiserating in the loss of friends and family from war in their home
countries.

de Jinjer de cómo perdieron su casa un par de veces en diez años, es increíble
que hayan podido llevar su música a través del océano para que la disfrutemos,
y me alegro de que hayan podido traer a una banda compañera de su país para que

The Slavic community is strong here, with North Port being
one of the only places where a Ukrainian boss scolded me, insisting that I need
to learn more Polish. One of my friends
got a job working around here, and he asked which language would be the best to
learn to know what his coworkers are saying.
Though is boss is Ukrainian and has Serbians and Russians working for
him, he suggested that most of them understood the mother tongue of Russian if
he really wanted to take the time to learn a language.
La comunidad eslava es fuerte aquí, con North Port siendo
uno de los únicos lugares donde un jefe ucraniano me regañó, insistiendo en que
necesito aprender más polaco. Uno de mis
amigos consiguió un trabajo por aquí, y me preguntó qué idioma sería el mejor

Over here, we do not see the shocking photos of what is
going on in the Ukraine on the daily news.
With a “not in my backyard” mentality, some people might not realize
that bombs are going off and destroying people’s houses. They don’t see it in their neighborhood, so
they have the blinders on, making it easy to not fully understand the reality
of the destruction that war has had there lately.
Aquí, no vemos las fotos impactantes de lo que está
sucediendo en Ucrania en las noticias diarias.
Con una mentalidad de "no en mi patio trasero", algunas

It’s like when I try to tell people about the cleanup from

No, the magical fairy didn’t come with a wand to make everything better
overnight here or in the Ukraine. Sorry
for those who don’t really understand that a bomb’s destruction isn’t instantly
cleaned up overnight or any time soon, as that’s a scar that can take years to
try to heal with many affected.
Es como cuando trato de contarle a la gente sobre la

Even though all of the drama, the music of Jinjer and Space
of Variations has survived through it. The
Ukrainian metal is like a battle cry that they will not go down easy, that they
will continue to fight, even when people think that they are the underdog. It’s a warning to not underestimate the
passion behind the music, as there might actually be more of a message than the
typical chanting style of music.
A pesar de todo el drama, la música de Jinjer y Space of
Variations ha sobrevivido a través de él.

There’s a sultry sexiness to it that seduces you. Before you know it, you’re entangled in it,
not wanting to find your way out, more than delighted to get lost inside of it,
pounding away. When you feel that
release of pent-up frustration that metal has to offer, you will not be
disappointed with the live show.

When I was working with the foreign professional baseball
players earlier this year, I had asked if any of them were into metal, and they
tried telling me that Latinos were more into salsa and Bad Bunny than they were
into metal. Trying to explain that metal
is a great way to get amped up, get the blood flowing, I can’t help but look at
bands like P.O.D. as a shining example that can be the exception, as opposed to
the rule. Regardless of whatever you
thought Latino, Pacific Islander, African, English or Ukrainian music was supposed
to sound like, metal can be a way of venting frustrations in a mosh pit, and
knowing how frustrated I was to have my home messed up by a hurricane, I can
only imagine the pent up anger of losing homes twice in a decade from war would
be great fuel to metal music.
