Author, Director and Producer Marisa L. Williams shares her thoughts on how writing varies from directing and producing, detailing her upcoming events at Fantasm. The Horror, Paranormal and Burlesque Convention will be held Sept. 15-17 at the Doubletree by Hilton at the entrance to Universal Studios in Orlando. Williams will host a series of filmed events for the next movie project, inviting the general public to dress up as their own character and join in the fun of making a horror movie.

What’s the biggest challenge of being a movie producer?

Trying to find reliable people and stick to a dwindling budget. There’s so many moving parts, and just when you think you have it all balanced, someone drops out, forcing you to find a last minute replacement. Everyone wants to be a star and feels entitled, asking for favors that are not in the budget, so the budget continues to take hits from the number of people involved. If it’s not paying for hotels, or stocking up for merchandise like T-shirts, there’s always somebody that needs something, which is tough when trying to do a zero budget production.

People think I’m out to steal their partner, because I’m not married. I lost a handful of great musicians simply due to their significant others thinking I am out to steal them away. It’s frustrating when you cannot use your best people due to unfounded jealousy issues. I think it was Bette Midler that mentioned how disappointed it is to find out that people are not always necessarily happy to see you succeed. It gets lonely when you want someone to be happy for you, but it’s like a ghost town. I stopped celebrating small accomplishments and have learned to merely focus on the next thing on the horizon. The thing that frustrates me the most is saying something, noticing that a man does not hear what I say unless another man standing next to me repeats verbatim what I said. Then they turn to that guy and pretend like it’s the best thing they ever heard in their life, even after I just said it. We still have a long way to go for equality.

You say that after your documentary just won an award for female empowerment and best female movie.

Yes, “Blow It Up” just won those awards and was about me having an ATF clearance to do pyrotechnics for Garden State Fireworks, a job most people don’t think women do, but my boss was a female, and I have worked with a number of women on my crews over the years. The documentary discusses a little bit about my books, and it also shows the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. I’m glad that people can look at what I do, and realize there’s more to life than just being a housewife. I was really honored when girls came to me backstage at Ozzfest and told me that I had hoped to paved the path for them to be able to be on tour. They said before me, most women were not known for helping, we’re merely concerned with having their hair, and make up done, and I was not into that. If somebody needed a hand, I would lend it. If somebody needed a driver, I got behind the wheel of the trucks and drove a triple trailer for the tour. I have never been a big makeup person, so you usually only find me wearing lipstick. I don’t use a lot of hair products, so I don’t spend time with curling irons and hairspray the way that others do. Those girls were amazed by the stuff that I took for granted doing every day. I was just being myself, and if they found that empowering, I think that’s awesome. I love proving to people that you do not have to fit the stereotypical mold to succeed.

What’s the biggest challenge with managing talent?

How many people back out for lame reasons. It’s bad when it’s a jealous partner that convinced someone to drop out, but there’s one thing that breaks my heart more than that. Whenever somebody tells me that they don’t think they are good enough, that’s what breaks my heart. That’s the hardest part. I try to be a cheerleader for people, but you cannot always convince people. I can see their talent, but if they don’t believe in it, their self-doubt gets the best of them, they withdraw into themselves, and they stop responding. The reason this breaks my heart so much is two to the second to the last conversation I had with Tony Costanza before he died. He literally told me, “my biggest regret in life is thinking I was never good enough.” Since he said that to me, I realized how important it is to help people believe that they are good enough. The biggest advice I can give people is stop caring what other people think. Just put your all out there, and see what happens. If you don’t put your all out there, you never know what could’ve been.

How is writing books different than movies?

When you are writing a book, your only limitation is your imagination. When you are writing for film, you have to think of what is possible for a movie to be made. In a book, you can just say that somebody is walking on the ceiling, and somebody can picture that. However, in a movie, if you want to show someone walking on the ceiling, you have to have safety nets and harnesses, along with all the right gear, and an actor who is willing to do stunts. There’s a lot more that goes into it. In a book, your words are like a paintbrush. In a movie, you have to create that scenery for people to see. You can’t just tell them, you have to show them.
Cuando escribes un libro, tu única limitación es tu imaginación. Cuando escribes para una película, tienes que pensar en lo que es posible para hacer una película. You have one screenplay that rhymes, “Lecherous Treacherous Leprechauns.” How is that different from writing a poem?

A rhyming screenplay is basically like an extended poem. It’s almost like prose, but it’s totally different. With poetry, it’s trying to express an idea in a limited amount of words. It’s almost like less is more. However, I have been known to be more of a kitchen sinkist, where I will throw in everything but the kitchen sink. One of my advisers from Johns Hopkins University made the observation when I was working on my thesis, and she said that I would not allow anything to go to waste as far as my writing is concerned. Thus, I have taken the idea of poetry and extended it into a longer format, such as in books and screen plays. When trying to write a movie that rhymes, it is a little more challenging, because you have to think of the longer form. In a poem, you were just trying to catch one moment or one idea in a standalone poem. In a rhyming screenplay, the whole thing has an arch of conflict and resolution, with multiple elements that need to be featured, as opposed to one idea.

What was your biggest surprise while organizing your events at Fantasm Horror Convention?

How many people actually got excited about it. When I had a couple people back out, I was shocked at how many people were eager to take their place. It’s been really nice to get in touch with some of my friends from the past. I’m literally having people flying internationally to be there for my event, and that’s very humbling. We are very thankful that phantasm is giving us the opportunity to do a couple shows, as I have not been commanding the stage in like a decade and a half. There’s so many people from the entertainment history that came out of the woodwork’s to support me. There’s so many people that are watching from behind the scenes to see what I will do. It’s a little intimidating at times, but ultimately, I’m excited about all of it. I’m still a little nervous to see how things will go, but I think that’s true of any show. I have faith in my ability to command a crowd, and I have faith in my friends that are joining me at the concerts. There’s a great group of us that have come together. Even though the hurricanes have been putting a damper on the weather, it’s not freaking out too many people. They are still coming, so I suggest you do, too.

What can people expect from your live performances at the Juicy Lucy Extravaganzas Sept. 15 and 16?

I don’t even know what to expect yet, so I can’t even tell you what to expect. Honestly, we are going to be competing against the burlesque show that is going on next-door, so we are going to bring a little burlesque element of our own. We will definitely be bringing in the big drums, and we will definitely be making a lot of noise to get peoples attention. The entire thing is being filmed for the next project, so there will be some acting elements with it as well. At 9 o’clock, we have the demonic dating game. Winners from that will be our guests of honor at the concert that starts at 11 p.m., and we are hoping they will be up for some acting roles, but we shall see how it goes.

Yes, characters from the film will be on the dating block. The demons will enter the dating scene, and I cannot control what they say or do on stage. I will be as curious as everyone else to see how that goes.

That will be held at noon on Saturday, September 16. Unfortunately, a few of us involved in the film project have had near death experiences. I personally had to make the choice whether to live or die when I was trapped under the water during my cliff diving accident when I was only 19. That left doctors saying that I would never walk again and never have children, but at least I can walk now. The main actor also had an accident that left him immunocompromised, so he will be telling people about what he experienced. The idea is that truth can be stranger than fiction, and life can be scary, way more scary than most horror stories.

Which is more challenging, writing or teaching?

For me, writing is a fun release. It’s something I do whether I get paid for it or not. Teaching, on the other hand, involves other people, and trying to convey information in a way that they will understand can be a challenge. For example, when I was working with the foreign, professional baseball players, teaching them English, there were times when they had no idea what I was saying. I would have to rely on body language and other clues to get them to understand. I remember many times that the guys got frustrated, but once they figured it out, you see that light bulb click on, and just all those fears and frustrations wash away. Before I became a college professor, I would hear other teachers talk about that moment, but to really experience it for yourself, it’s different. That’s when you can really know that you are helping make a difference in someone’s life. Teaching may be more challenging, but it’s also more rewarding for that factor. I like to know that I’m helping people in a positive fashion to help them change their lives for the better.

La enseñanza, por otro lado, involucra a otras personas, y tratar de transmitir información de una manera que entiendan puede ser un desafío. Me gusta saber que estoy ayudando a las personas de una manera positiva para ayudarles a cambiar sus vidas para mejor.
