After Hurricane Ian ripped through southwest Florida last year, there's not a whole huge selection of haunted houses in the area, prompting some local residents to create their own haunted attractions. There's a couple in the Port Charlotte area that we recently visited, both completely different from each other, making both worth visiting, especially if you're looking for a local thrill on a friendly budget. Both haunted attractions are asking for donations, with the house on Montrose and Page asking for cat and dog food donations, while the other in Englewood is asking people to put donations into the coffin out front.

Let's start with the haunted house on Montrose and Page, as that has been a community staple for a while. Last year's event was disrupted by the hurricane, with many decorations being ripped away by the storm. With the owner basically starting over from scratch, the event almost did not happen this year, and not due to lack of efforts by the owner, but due to county code enforcement saying he's made it too big.

He had some structure that was over 15 feet tall, and the county stepped in. A small fight ensued, as the owner insisted that the structure would not be permanent, only used for seasonal decoration. Eventually, the county caved in, realizing that locals need something to make them smile for the Halloween season (or for whatever reason, but let's just call it that to make it politically correct).

Now, I'm not quite sure if the owner has a sneaky set up or if there's like a million people wearing the same outfit, but Jason from Friday the 13th seems to appear around every corner to creep you out. Creeping through the dark spooky hallways, animatronics come to life to scare you unexpectedly. For a cat or dog food donation, this is better than some haunted attractions I've paid much more to visit.

Now, if you head down 776, over the El Joebean bridge, there's another independent haunted attraction in the form of cemetery trail. Located at 12054 Helicon Ave, Port Charlotte, FL, which is really in the Englewood area, this display starts at 7 p.m. and was even featured on Good Morning America. With your donation in the coffin in the front, there's candy for trick-or-treating delights as well.

Was that a ghost child riding a bike through the shed, or was that another spooky creature in there waiting to scare?
