Like a few others who claim it, Robert calls to me. I think he likes to get visitors. I mean, if you were trapped in the body of a doll, wouldn’t you want to have a visitor or two?

The thing is that Robert, no longer lives at the Artist house. You can stay at the Artist house, and if you’re brave enough to stay in the attic, where Robert the doll lived, you might have a cool story by the end of the night from it. Whether you believe the rumor that an angry servant put some kind of Santeria curse on the doll, or if it’s simply a spirit that attached itself to the object, people cannot deny the odd things happen around this doll.

A lot of people claim a childlike quality. As I rolled up to the fort, I found myself feeling the childlike pull, but with an attitude that’s like, ok, I’ve been here longer than you. How can you call a spirit a child if they have been around longer than you?

It’s like he’s the new star prisoner of the fort, with the draw of so many people, yet unable to leave it. Now, he has all these guards to make sure that he doesn’t act up too much. Before, he had his whole run of the Artist house, but now he has all those military people from back in the day that are attached to the fort to keep him at bay.

I thought it was Robert that called to me straight out the gate, but now I’m beginning to question. Before the tour even began, my friend and I opted to use the little girl’s room. There were two doors, and when she said it one was only a one seater, I instinctively reached for the other door.

There was major resistance when I tried to open it, and I thought wow this is a really old door that’s fighting me. The red light did not help when I opened it, and I found myself face-to-face with who I thought had been Robert. The door handle came off in my hand, which definitely freaked me out a little bit.

Staring at the doll face to face, there is definitely a heaviness in the air. Come to find out, I was not even looking at Robert. It was actually his twin, who had gone on many adventures in his place, so he shares a similar energy, but his name is Richard.

We circled back to start the tour, and as we walked around, even in the gift store, our ghost hunting detectors were lighting up. It was like an entity was following my friend around the fort the entire time that we were there. It was so obvious that when it came time for the first challenge, the lady who was picked pointed at my friend and said, “her light has been going off the most!”

Twice I went to the area and I did not notice my name there. It was not until I went for the third time that I noticed not only was my name written on a doll, but it also said Michigan, which is where I am from originally. The irony is that I collect creepy dolls.

That was in the same hallway where I was originally pulled to. It’s just the next little cubby up from where Richard was on display across from the Santeria. After the tour, we had a lot more interaction in that area, especially with my flashlight, turning off randomly.

My friend had filmed it, and in the video, we saw orbs that we did not see with our eyes in the dark. The funny thing is that the orbs go directly into the flashlight in the video, then the light turns off. That was the only area where we specifically had my flashlight turn off randomly multiple times in a row, as it worked fine after we left the area.

Once I was standing there long enough, I felt that perhaps it was not Richard the doll, so much as the Santeria objects. When I had mentioned the Santeria objects, I did have the flashlight turn off. That just kind of strengthens my thoughts of that specific area.

It’s almost overwhelming when there’s too many people in the room. It’s hard to get the individual attention. We knew we had to come back once the group dispersed.

When they announced the time for our VIP ghost hunt, they’re giving us access to all kinds of toys, from not only readers and spirit boxes, but also pendulums, a Ouija board, and all kinds of other fun things. There are challenges to do in various places. However, we were instantly pulled to the middle of the fort.

Grabbing a pendulum, a spirit box, a red, flashlight, and some other stuff, we went out to the courtyard. As soon as we were outside, we heard the word jump come through the spirit box. I asked if he wanted us to jump or to visit, and it very clearly said visit.

The middle level of the infirmary had a few moments, and I would’ve liked to explore the basement a little bit more, but there was a lot of standing water from the recent rains. For me, the top level had the most interaction when there were no people up there besides my friend and I. When we went to leave the infirmary, I very clearly heard, “Yes ma’am,” and “thank you for visiting.”

That made my friends head turn in my direction. Most of the spirit box is static and fuzzy. When you hear very clear words come through, you cannot help but have your eyes open up a little bit and a smile stretch across your face in surprise.

Thing is, when I did the spirit box in Gettysburg, I had a very clear "thank you for visiting" come through there as well. It made the guide stop. She claimed she had never heard them say that before, but they keep telling me it, which strengthens my belief that the spirit realm may be more closely related to ours than people acknowledge.

When it came to Robert, it was not the spirit box that we had the most interaction with. Of course, our detectors spiked into the red around him, and that is to be expected. However, when I had the most interaction with around him, it was with the pendulum.

There was a little girl who seen Robert before us, and she was holding conversations with him out loud. Her father tried to pull her away and let us visit, but she would circle back to see him again. It was obvious that she was interacting with the doll, and it definitely made the father very uncomfortable to the point that he could not pull her away and wanted very much to leave, as you could see borderline panic in his eyes as he attempted to lead her out of the fort.

Not everyone has the same experience. If you are sensitive, there’s a number of entities to choose from. It’s just a matter of which one wants to interact with you on that particular evening.

It’s like I was telling my friend about the Key West cemetery. When you meander in there, just listen to the chickens, follow the animals, and they will lead you to various graves. No matter how many times I have wandered through there, I find something new every time.

There are plenty of haunted places to choose from in Key West, but the fort has so many entities in one location. It’s not just Robert the doll. It’s all the military people, and all the sick people who died over the years.

When I was in the hallway with Richard the doll, I made a comment about the infirmary. That’s when the light went off. When I mentioned tuberculosis, I felt a heaviness in my chest that was like the spirit allowing me to feel the sickness that rampaged through the fort back in the day.

There’s so much history in that location, and when you go there at night, staring off into the dark ocean, seeing the bright constellations, you can imagine what people were seeing back in the day. It’s almost like a time warp. It’s an untouched scenery that has not changed.
