The Florida Complex League Baseball Championship Playoffs will begin tomorrow with the New Yorkers hosting the first round of games to determine who will compete in the final round. With both the New York Mets and the New York Yankees clenching the North and East divisions, just like last year, they are both returning to the championship games, with the Mets hosting the Atlanta Braves and the Yankees hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow. Winners of the first round will go onto the final round.

While it might not surprise many to see the New York teams back on the bill for the championship, the real fight for to be champs occurred in the South division with Boston Red Sox and the Braves battling, trading off between second and third place up until the end, where a head-to-head really determined who would be moving into the championship battle. When the Braves defeated the Red Sox in a soggy day of playing, champagne was popped back at the clubhouse, even though Rays would beat them the next day.

In my interview with Boston Red Sox Manager Jimmy Gonzalez, he mentioned that the wild card winner would be determined by the team with the highest winning percent. While Boston was trying to steal that second place spot in the South back from the Braves, the other team that was hot on the heels of the championship was ultimately the Phillies. While Braves had a percentage of .556, and Red Sox percentage was .528, the Phillies were trying their best to edge in, having a percentage of .545, with the Detroit Tigers clawing right behind them with a percentage of .537, making for nail biting final games.

Since the Tampa Bay Rays had that taste of blood from being in the championship playoffs last year, taking on both the New York teams, with the Yankees ultimately stealing the title last year, I knew that the Rays would not be going down without a final fight for the Braves, making that a must-see game. Judging by last year's game with the Mets, the Rays are known to come out with a final fight, not going down easily. As predicted, they were not going to simply hand over a win to the Braves, claiming that last win for themselves.

Unfortunately, I followed the information on the MiLB site, as it said that game would be held at the Charlotte Sports Complex, which I thought was odd, given how it had been destroyed by Hurricane Ian last year, though I knew they had been working on it. Thinking I must have missed the update on the complex being complete, I drove there, only to see the workers shaking their heads, as if they had told more than a few people that the game was, in fact, not being held there but up in Sarasota at the Baltimore Orioles complex, as they had been nice enough to host the displaced team this season. Having been the first time I drove up to the Charlotte Sports Park since having to go there for supplies like water, ice, food and tarps during the hurricane, it brought back those feelings, but it was nice to see that they were making progress on rebuilding, even if it still has a long way to go still.

If you want to talk about humbling, try staying for a hurricane that was supposed to hit north of Tampa, only for it to make landfall directly over your house. As scary as it was to have a tree fall on my parent's house with my dad and I inside, or as frustrating as it is to still be waiting on ceilings to be put in the house that I bought a few years ago, it was a godsend to have supplies being handed out at the Tampa Bay Rays stadium and other baseball complexes after the storm, as that's truly supporting the surrounding communities. With people watching the current hurricanes, it's nice to know that the baseball stadiums had the community's back after the impact last year, which is comforting when watching the storms this year, even though we pray this season will not be like last year's destruction.

From collecting supplies for the fires in Maui to showing support during the hurricanes, it's nice to know that baseball is there for people beyond just a game, and it's scary to think of what destruction these players might be facing if they are returning home to where one of the hurricanes are raging.

That's what makes watching them even more fun, realizing not only their struggles in trying to claw their way up to the top tier of the majors, but being there to cheer them on as they rocket to stardom. Watching them play, they laser focus into the games, trying their best to not be distracted by anything else life throws at them. Their passion and determination as rookies make for some of the best baseball playing in the game, and putting local friendly rivals like Braves and Rays together for one last round only means that their playing should be on point in the final game before the championship.
