Whenever Crowbar comes to town, you know they're going to dredge up some doomy groove delight for metalheads to sink their teeth into, and this visit to Tampa last night was no exception. Joining forces with Tampa local band Exit Strategy to get the crowd amped up, Primitive Man continued to heighten the groove until Crowbar blew the place up. You can't help but join into a NOLA type of party atmosphere.

It amuses me when people don't realize who people like Kirk Windstein are before they are on stage. As soon as I walked into the club, my eyes were on he and his wife Robin setting up at the merch booth, though I didn't say anything until later, when Kirk was checking out the taco bus, with nobody around him seemingly to know who he was for a brief moment. Elbowing the person next to me, I pointed, and they looked at me confused, asking, "are you talking about that old man standing over there with the beard?"

Uh, that old man is the frontman for the band that's about to kick your ass when he takes the stage. I look at the person I'm talking to, note that he's about the same age as Kirk, so who's talking old here? Down here in Florida, we don't consider the older age limit the same as other places, and in comparison to the majority of my neighbors, they'd probably consider him a young whippersnapper rabble rouser.

The guys in Exit Strategy might be able to verify that there's an older population in Florida here. Those local guys were able to call the people into the music, getting the mosh pit started straight out the gate. As soon as I went up to the stage to take pictures, I was unapologetically getting slammed into, like welcome to the pit, and if you don't like it or can't stand it, you better get up on out of the way...

I'm used to holding my own, so I didn't shy away. The person I was with may have gone to the drummer's vantage point, out of the way of the mosh scene, but I am not a stranger to being in a pit. Bump into me all you want, but if you hurt the camera, we're going to have a problem.

Territory established in the front row for the rest of the show, I made myself at home, getting cozy with Primitive Man. They bring that groove that you can wriggle around to like a stripper at times. It's those good gloomy beats that are perfect for bringing in Halloween season, ushering fall into the air.

As far as Crowbar goes, we have a bit of a history, as I first met Kirk when we were touring on Ozzfest together in 2002, when I was just a little Harley Girl, and he was in band called Down. After that, he toured with Superjoint Ritual, which I covered, and one of his touring mates planted the seed in my head that New Orleans is a cool place for writers to live, inspiring me to move down there. Now, I have been told that many of our adventures behind the scenes cannot be published, as we need to leave something for your imagination to ponder, but I definitely recall a balcony party with Black Label Society back in the day with a whole crew of people that left me laughing to say the least.

I don't care if it's Crowbar, Down, Superjoint, or any of his other projects, such as with Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed, anytime these NOLA cats are involved, it's going to be a good time. Tommy brings it hard on the drums in Crowbar, and Kirk had established himself as a metal god long ago in many eyes. Matt Brunson and Shane Wesley round out the Crowbar sound in a way that brings the groove beat to the sludge, where you cannot help but slither around, sliming up against the people next to you intimately.
