My zombie music video premiered at the Shock Stock horror convention in London, Ontario, and I may have been one of the furthest attendees to come in from Florida. The music video is from my latest horror feature film, called “Demons Among Us,” which submitted to film festivals last week. One of the lead actresses from the film, Sheena Ann, went up to the premiere with me, and since the film has not been released, not very many people knew who we were on site, allowing that voyeurism.

When we approached one of the founders of the festival, he did not immediately know who we were when we walked up. When I explained that I had some books that I would like to give away at the Premier, he asked which video was mine, and when I told him, his eyes grew wide. He admitted that he had to fight for my video to be in the festival, and it’s always nice to hear that someone is fighting for you behind-the-scenes.

Apparently, one of the other judges felt my video had some shocking elements that should not be aired in front of the general public, and Jake exclaimed, “that’s why we have to show it!” When there is a horror convention with shock in the title, and hearing people fought for my art, at least I knew I found my people.

With my video airing around seven in the evening, there were mixed ages in the audience, and I even got to blubber for a while ahead of time, making people guess what was the shocking element in my music video, which nobody guessed. Handing out Books to people is always fun, but watching people’s reactions was the whole reason I went up there. Karen did not disappoint me, as she wandered unsuspectingly into my music video midway through, stopping dead in her tracks, eyes wide, holding out her hand to stop her partner, like it was coming for her personally and she couldn’t believe it.

The whole thing was satisfying. Besides my video premiering at the horror convention, there were so many really cool vendors with oddities like taxidermy ducklings dressed as nuns and pirates. There were some really cool graphic novelists present, some famous horror actresses and actors, as well as unexpected surprises, like a haunted house in the middle of the convention.

Bill Moseley of “The Devil’s Rejects” and other Rob Zombie movies was up there promoting his latest movie, which combines Nazi medical tinkering with meth, cannibalism and more. He was the lucky recipient of one of my books, the “Black Market Doctor” screenplay, that also correlates with my music video, horror feature, and my book series, “The Murder House,” which was published in 2014. He had a really cool question and answer session just before my premiere.

There was so many cool films at the convention. Uncle Sleazo’s definitely stood out, as it had some hilarious commercial spoofs in it, like the Jeffery Dahmer play set for kids. I don’t want to ruin the rest of the surprise of that one, because it is worth checking out if you like comedy horror.

If you’re looking for some old-school VHS tapes, this convention definitely had that, as well as a hearse with a heart VHS sticker. If you need more VHS paraphernalia, their mascot was Tape Ape. That’s a character that has a VHS tape as a head, with the body of an ape, and he accepted a lot of Crystal Shocker awards for people who were not at the convention.

Yes, it is just like it sounds. The awards are crystal hands with two fingers up, followed by one finger. If you know what that means, you know what the shocker is.

This is a convention where you see the films that might not air in the major theaters. There are some creative entries, even a horror story about beans, which was actually really good, better than it sounds. It just proves that you can make a horror story out of literally anything if you try hard enough, and that’s art.
