Some people may not realize that a basketball star is the one to stand up to NASCAR. One of the most famous NBA players of all times, who still leads the shoe industry with demands from youngsters, has taken a stand against the monopolistic practices of NASCAR. Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin co-own 23XI Racing; the team and Front Row Motorsports filed a lawsuit in 2024 that is completely founded, demanding the break up of monopolistic practices that NASCAR has been getting away with.

In the past, NASCAR has tried to force racers to use their proprietary parts, which has put many engineers out of business. However, due to Michael Jordan‘s lawsuit against NASCAR, some of those engineers are now finding jobs again. This is a good thing, because more engineers in the development of racing only means more competition to see who’s really the fastest, and isn’t that how NASCAR really started, to see which car was the fastest to outrun the cops when they’re running Illegal alcohol during prohibition?

Being from Michigan, I have always had an interest in the auto industry, especially after working for a manufacturer. One of my early gigs was doing photography for The Iron Horse magazine, and they sent me to cover a number of races back in the day (which started with motorcycles and escalated into cars and trucks), and doing this while doing entertainment, led to me meeting someone from the Earnhardt family. More recently, when I went to cover a local NASCAR racer, I put my request into the media department, and they tried to force me to pay them to cover the sport, which I have never done as a journalist, and I do not plan to ever do. Don’t get me wrong, if someone is giving me a room or something like that, and they want me to throw in a little money to cover the cost of something that, when I’m getting something out of it, that’s totally understandable, but for a sport press agent to insist that I pay money to cover a sport as a journalist that’s supposed to be neutral, paying money to do my job just negates the whole understanding of neutrality in the first place.

I, for one, completely stand with Michael Jordan’s logic. While some might view it as a contest to see who has more money and more pull, the reality is that any monopoly should be broken up to encourage more competition, whether that’s a sport, an industry, or any other business. In this economy, I am glad that someone powerful is standing up and giving people the opportunity to get back to work, to advance the sport.

Even though people from the Earnhardt family encouraged me at a young age to cover racing, I had to step away when people started trying to charge me money to do my job. Hopefully, this lawsuit will make some much-needed changes. Who knows, you might just see some more racing coverage from me if that’s the case, seeing how I have been on an independent, silent, boycott of the sport ever since that ordeal.

It reminds me of the neighborhood kids song “Start a Fire.” It’s at rise against the greedy minds, and I’m happy to see it happening. My heart truly goes out to anyone who was ever discouraged by NASCAR, whether that’s a job that was lost due to pressures from the monopolies, or even the pressures from higher-ups to rig a race, as I have been told about from the people behind the scenes who have walked away for those very reasons.

As a high school teacher, I asked my class yesterday what’s the biggest thing that happens in Daytona, even pointing to the scheduled weekend, and none of the students in my class in Florida knew the answer. Taking it as a learning opportunity, I had to put on some of the 10 best big ones from NASCAR for the kids to see what I was talking about. Turning some of those kids onto the sport for the first time only proved to me that there’s a lot of people out there who don’t know about NASCAR, even as big as they think they are, so it’s exciting to see how many new fans might just blossom out of this.

Of course, as I learned from going to the Sebring racetrack, and seeing the lead singer of AC/DC and his wife both racing their Porsches, there’s a lot of interesting people that are into racing that you might not even expect. In my opinion, due to the original outlaw nature of the sport being who can outrun the cops while running illegal alcohol during prohibition, I think there should not be any monopoly in the sport quite honestly. The sport started with independent people, simply trying to not get arrested, so it should really boil down to who is the best and can get away the fastest, not who can use the exact same parts the best, as bootleggers didn’t always do things the same way as their competitors.

Let’s get back to seeing who is actually the best overall. Let’s see who has the best engineers, can make the best parts, and can make those parts go the fastest with a team. People may not always give props to the mechanics and engineers behind the scenes that are actually making the cars go, giving all the glories to just the drivers, but there’s literally is a whole team of people behind the scenes that are affected by these small changes, as well as the big ones like lawsuits.

Even the journalists behind the scenes are affected, and those are the people that most wouldn’t even think about. However, when I approach a sport with the request to cover someone with my same last name who lives in my same town, someone who I’ve had dinner with their family, it just seems a little odd that they would want me to pay money when I am literally eating dinner with this athlete’s family a couple blocks from my house. Now, I could write about all kinds of backwards practices within the sport, having the pipeline directly from the driver‘s father, as well as a mechanic’s father, but we won’t talk about how certain cars are given to certain drivers and not others, or the Lil politics behind the scenes that people just don’t talk about, like when those higher-ups come to the mechanics and ask them to dumb down their car for somebody else to win, but let’s just hope the sport improves with this lawsuit.

Being an author that had 13 books censored this year by a professional sports team - and mind you, those were educational books for children, not offensive books - I am happy to see somebody stand up to the sports industries. I hope more people follow suit. I tip my hat to Michael Jordan for having the guts and the resources to be able to stand up for what he thinks is right.
