Before I even went to the game today, I told myself I would write a game day poem called Runs Batted In, hoping that the game would have enough of them to justify the name. It's like the baseball spirits knew what I had in mind, and they did not disappoint, as they hit double digits in runs batted in. The reason I wanted to do the next baseball poetry book as Runs Batted In, was because I didn't know what that meant.

I know what RBI stands for now, but when I first started doing sports journalism more than a decade ago, I was clueless as to what that stood for, guessing at what the letters of the acronym stood for back then. When a fellow sports writer rolled his eyes at me, laughed and explained that RBI stood for Runs Batted In, I felt stupid. That's why I thought it would be a great topic for a poem aimed at the younger fans.

As far as the game today goes, as mentioned, it did not disappoint. The MiLB site shows that Boston currently ranks second, and Braves ranks third in the Florida Complex League. However, Atlanta showed that they're ready to give Boston a run for their money.

The first couple innings started a little slow, with no runs on the board, making me wonder if runs batted in would work as a poem title for the game. Just when you start to doubt, the third inning will make you a believer. Braves must've heard my wonders and answered with six whopping RBI's in the third inning.

One funny thing about sitting behind the Boston dugout is being able to hear the batters make comments on the pitches, saying they expected it to drop and it didn't. One said he saw the form of a curveball, but it never curved. Those pitchers have some tricks up their sleeves, so watch 'em!
