MC5 kicked out the jam again, releasing “Heavy Lifting,” their first album in 53 years. These iconic Detroiters prove that they are still iconic rockers and not ready for walkers. Founding band member Wayne Kramer said, “The MC5 represents a kind of uncompromising vision of the future and that is eternal…the flame keeps burning on."

Fueling rock n roll since the 1960’s, this legendary band has been covered by many, including The Presidents of the United States of America, the band that iconically played a cover of MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams” as the second song in their setlist on Mount Rushmore on Feb. 17, 1996. Am I the only one who can recall waiting up late to hear that concert broadcast live back then? I definitely think of MC5 as that band I was supposed to see and never got to, as an ex took tickets meant for me in New Orleans from a mutual friend who knew I was from Detroit, a show I still regret missing now.

For those out there like me who feel like they might have missed out on seeing MC5, we might hopefully get a chance yet to hear new music from the greats. On October 18, the band will be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Their latest album will drop just before their induction.

I don’t know about you, but I grew up listening to MC5. My mom turned me onto it when I was just a kid. She made sure that I knew who that band was growing up in Michigan, and they deserve to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame way more than others who did not even play rock.

One listen to this new album, and you will understand that these guys never stopped rocking. They may have been playing some of their classic songs from back in the day for quite a while, touring around the world, but with this new music, you can’t help but be drawn back into them like they are brand new. It is sure to suck in new fans that might not have ever heard of the band, and that’s the awesome thing about the transgression of their music, as they’ve only perfected their craft more over time to show people what rock is really about - and you can call me whatever, but rock is not rap or softcore.

If you need a lesson in rock history, just check these guys out. They can probably teach you a little bit more about the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle than some of the rappers, as rap is not rock. MC5 brings the punk influence, not the cheesy love songs that are elevator music; sorry former inductees.

Coming from a person who was at the very first opening concert for the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame, my only question is why did it take so long for MC5 to get inducted? In my opinion, they should’ve been in long before bands from other genres. Just because musicians are popular with a lot of people does not mean that R&B is rock ‘n’ roll; sorry.

The sad part about “Heavy Lifting” is though it features guitar and vocals by founding MC5 member Wayne Kramer, who also co-wrote 12 of the album's 13 songs together with Oakland singer/songwriter Brad Brooks, it may be bittersweet. Though the band was prolific for five decades, Kramer was the last remaining active member of MC5, and he passed away suddenly in February. His death was followed by drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson in May, making it Thompson's final studio recording.
