The latest release from Hollywood Vampires, "At Montreux Jazz Festival," features an unexpected lineup of Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, Johnny Depp, Chris Wise, and Tommy Henriksen, which plays with respect to lost heroes that cannot help but make you think back to all the friends lost in the music industry along the way. Literally, you cannot help but remember, as there are covers from some of their best songs in tribute. Even the ending has a hidden nod to Pink Floyd that surprises you when you see the track name.

As soon as I saw the lineup, before I even realized there were cover songs on the album, just seeing Johnny Depp playing in the band made me flash back to the early days with Matty Sullivan, who had known Johnny Depp way back from his early days playing around Fort Lauderdale before he was big. Matty Sullivan is one of those unsung heroes who passed, best known for being the first union drummer on Lenny Kravitz's album, to playing with Mick Mars' ex-wife in band called Baloney Sandwich. Flashing back to this, seeing the Boogieman title on the album, my only disappointment was hoping to hear a cover of KC and the Sunshine Band's song, which could be cool in a rock cover sped up properly.

Technically, we'll give props to Rob, even though I had said something to a musician I had hooked up with only a couple weeks before that I'd like to see what touring was all about, which probably triggered some sort of chain reaction, like you speak it into the world, and opportunity presents itself. It was later mentioned that Ozzy likely claimed me before Vincent could claim his own relative, just for fun, which likely went back to some earlier chain of events somewhere down the line, a lil personal poke in the ribs. I was told Vinny's daddy is my grandpa's second cousin's son, with one line dropping the "o" to Americanize, the other cousin's keeping the "o" in Fournier, as it appears in my name above here.

Thus, when I see Alice Cooper trying to hide in another band's name like Hollywood Vampires, which has actually been a side project of his for a while, I still gotta check out the latest to see if it's the greatest release so far yet. The band name actually goes back to an old drinking spot, an infamous club of Alice Cooper's, which included members like John Lennon, Micky Dolenz, and Keith Moon, amongst others. Just listening to this album takes me into so many of my own flashbacks over the years, hanging out with so many of these famous musicians that are now dead, like learning how to make an all-over pyramid geometric design with a beer can with Lemmy from Motorhead, getting kicked out of the bar, only the circle back to the exact same bar stools, as he smiled, "it's the last place they'll look for us."

Listening to the AC/DC cover, I can't help but remember meeting the lead singer of AC/DC while he and his wife were racing their Porsches in Sebring, FL. "We got the Joe," just kinda cracked me up. Joe Perry being one of those founding Vampires that has stood by faithfully during all sorts of shenanigans.

After Ozzfest, I got four piercings on the night I got to meet and hang out with both Vinny Paul and Dimebag Darrell, getting that last and final piercing after Phil's House of Shock back in the day. Oh, can I just plug Alice Cooper's haunted house in Michigan real quick, an actual asylum turned into a haunt?

This is just an album that induces flashbacks to other concerts and other times when you hear covers that some might argue are even better than the originals in some aspect. There's just so much talent condensed into a surprisingly good album that you can't help but jam to and let your brain wander. It's not exactly what you'd expect, as it was actually better than I expected it to be, having lil surprises that make you smile, or just nod along and get lost in the all too familiar groves that just sound too good.

It's like there's so many covers that get slaughtered, but when you have an all-star cast of musicians playing respectfully to some of their heroes and friends, you can actually tell they put their all into it. You can feel the heart that went into it. I don't know any other way to describe it, but you should hear it.

Let me also stress this is not an album of all covers, as there's some familiar Alice Cooper hits and other lil diddies that might just make you close your eyes and groove along to the beat. The musical talent is evident, including the timing. Sometimes, you get powerhouses together, but the timing is off, and that is most definitely not the case on this album, and with the fans screaming, you feel like you're there, too.
