Kicking off the Pirates at Braves Spring Training game today, the Florida Complex League (FCL) Braves received their championship rings. After covering the FCL Braves for a couple seasons, it’s like a proud mom watching her adopted son’s ring ceremony. You can’t help but be excited.

When you watch the Florida Complex League, it’s often the first chance people get to meet the rookie players, as there are different divisions players can advance to before hitting the majors. The FCL is often the first time foreign players come to America to play baseball professionally. It is often the proving ground for many American players who might get recruited from college, so you can watch the players early in their professional careers and bet on who will advance and who might not.

Everyone wants to advance to the next level, but not everyone gets the chance. Many players are taken out by injuries along the way, often unexpectedly, regardless of their talents. Last year, one of the FCL Braves was on the team for his second season, and he felt bad that he didn’t automatically advance with the rest of his “class,” as he referred to it. “It’s like being held back in school when everybody else advances to the next grade.” Though he might have felt bad then, had he not been “held back,” he wouldn’t have received the ring he did today, so everything just might happen for a reason after all.

Okay, so I may have gotten yelled at for whistling for my guys from the press box after only a couple of them, as my loud whistling was echoing through the headsets. One startled man asked, “is that coming from in here?” Head down like it was not me and silent after that lil whoopsie.

This season has been amazing so far, and today’s game was a nail biter, where you thought you knew the winner at first, but the Braves fought back furiously to tie it up. Everyone was wondering if they would go to a 10th inning, but they just called it a tie game. Both teams played equally well, people betting that one was going to take the other, but they just kept going back and forth, neither allowing the other to score.
