Braves Battle Rays: Bravos Rayos de Batalla

For those up north missing out on all these free Florida baseball games held at the various Spring Training complexes around the state, we have been keeping up on the Florida Complex League for you.  Though most people refer to these guys as rookies, there are some familiar faces that have been around the FCL for years, which means it is not their first season, as people think of when they hear the rookie term.  There's various levels of baseball, and when you watch the individual leagues, you can watch the moves the various teams make over the years, being able to hold back talent and unleash it unexpectedly.

You cannot always tell what will happen over the course of a season.  At this time last year, the Braves were the underdogs, not expected to even make it to play at the championship, let alone win it.  Thus, when you look at the wins and losses too early in the season, it may be misleading at the end.

Will they be able to pull off the same feat this year?  Now that they have a target on their back as the reining champs, it only makes the other teams a little more motivated to steal that title away from them.  That's why you can never be too sure this early in the FCL season to know who will get their rings.

One look at the banners around the Charlotte Sports Complex is an indication that the Rays will not go down without a fright, and they're probably very determined to get another championship banner to add to their collection.  Of course, there's all the other teams to contend with as well.  It's not uncommon to have a last minute fight for the right to play in the championship, and don't discount the underdogs, as the Braves have shown us last year and are surely up for proving it to everyone once again this year.

It's more to watch the FCL, as all of the players are out to make a name for themselves.  They want you to know their name, and they want to be the next big superstar that everyone is talking about.  That's why you never know what might happen on the field, from an accidentally on purpose injury that nobody can ever prove, to jumps and slides that have the vigor of youth before any major injuries.

When you see the road rash from these guys sliding into base to try to entertain fans, you'll understand that baseball is not all peanuts and hot dogs.  The guys in the FCL are the ones willing to give it their all in the hopes of moving up.  If you want to know who the next star will be, just watch a few games, and you can start to guess who is likely to be known in the future; of course, just when you think you know, injuries happen unexpectedly and all sorts of things can happen in the off-season to put a kink in things.

The best thing to do is to pick your favorites early, when they are in the FCL, and you can know the happiness of when they advance, and the disappointment of when they get hurt.  That's what sucks fans into baseball, getting to know the players, having someone to cheer for.  The players on the FCL are just building their fanbase, hoping you become one who cheers for them, so support your favorites now.

As mentioned, the FCL offers free games at each of the Spring Training stadiums, so check the individual team schedules to know when they are playing and where.  Now that school's out for summer, it might just be worth the road trip to come see all your favorite teams play.  Will your favorite player in the FCL make it to the majors, and will you be cheering him on the whole way of this journey there?

Rays and Braves Battle in Baseball: Rays y Bravos luchan en béisbol

With the real June start of FCL Baseball sneaking up in June, the Rays and Braves Florida Complex League Baseball teams were already picking up the battle where last season left off. It’s interesting to peek this year’s players, with many familiar faces from last season missing, as some have moved up to other leagues, and others were not back for a variety of other reasons, varying from injuries that didn’t heal right, new injuries, and contracts that ended for so many reasons that it’s heartbreaking. The few remaining familiar faces include a few that’s shocking they have not moved up yet, but with it being professional teams, they have to leave a few surprise rounds left in the chamber to be able to shock their opponents later in the season.

Though the FCL might be considered minor players, this is the training ground where the next major players will be plucked from. That’s the real excitement behind baseball, watching players rise from the start of their careers.

For the pool of foreign players that dive into the majors, the FCL is often where they are first introduced to America. It’s a battle between players to see who becomes a real standout. It’s not just teams against other teams, but it’s the start of individual careers.

For those who followed through the finals last year, a few familiar names moved up to the Carolina League. Carlos Manuel Colenarez was on fire in last year’s final, resulting in his move upwards to the Charleston RiverDogs. Others, such as catcher Angel Galarraga  joined him on the journey north for the Rays Single-A affiliate.

Para aquellos que siguieron hasta la final el año pasado, algunos nombres familiares ascendieron a la Liga de Carolina. On the Braves side, heavy hitter Jeremy Celedonio advanced to their Single-A affiliate the Augusta GreenJackets. Teammate Ambrioris Tavarez has been a target of some pitchers, making his presence known on the field. Though many others advanced as well, they still have some strong players on the FCL field that returned from last year and are now making their way into starting position, so it will be interesting to watch the movement between leagues this season.

Returning from last year, Jose Dilone on first base is not afraid to jump and dive, or smack a ball to the outfield.  With pitchers like Giomar Diaz, who dominated the 5th, 6th and 7th innings with nobody able to score with him on the pitching mound, as well as Miguel Hernandez, who was able to get more playing time than last year, one never knows who will be the next to advance up.  Rays players like De La Cruz, Jimenez, and Barragan have been making their presence known as well, fighting for that advancing pole position, so who wants to lay bets on which player gets called up next?

With new faces on both teams, the fun part is seeing who will rise up, and it's not always the ones that you might think are the most obvious.  Injuries are a reality that happen, so a star player can be easily taken out by a ball soaring around 100 miles an hour.  Players also improve with time, so when you see one that struggles on the field, it may just be that learning experience that motivates them to learn from mistakes, try harder and rise up above and beyond the rest of the pack.

After running like a speeding bullet shot from a gun, sliding into base, getting friction rashes from the dirt and gravel ripping through uniforms, these are the guys that are getting beat up on a regular basis to prove themselves and their careers.  These minor leaguers are fighting to get to the majors, willing to throw themselves into the heat of the frying pan in hopes of getting tossed up to the next level.  Ball-shaped bruises are a regular reality that fans do no always see, but these guys are willing to take a beating to put on a good game for fans, making this level of playing some of the most exciting.

With their regular season really starting to heat up in June, the Florida Complex League is some of the best deals in baseball, often offering free games for fans.  As the summer rolls in, America's past time promotes the sport and advancing careers of these players by having these free games, giving fans the opportunities to watch the careers blossom into the majors.  For those betters out there, it's always a thrill to gamble on which player will be moving up next, as players in the majors get hurt or transferred, requiring one of these young bucks to stomp up to the next level in a flash, leaving room for another to come up and fill their spot.

Though there might be a ton of new faces on the field from last season, and a few favorites that have returned to fuel this season forward, the battle between teams continues, season after season.  With Tampa Bay Rays taking on the FCL Finals against the Yankees last year, they came to the game ready to show they are just as strong as last year, taking the win on this game, but the Braves were not afraid to answer back, making it one of those games where you were not sure exactly who would take the win.  When you get those nail biting games that go back and forth, that's the excitement of the sport.
