Suicides Increase with Insurance Rates: Los suicidios aumentan con las tarifas de los seguros

Speaking with a doctor in North Port, FL, earlier this month, he mentioned all of his patients that day were people who had been recently priced out of their homes.  They were feeling helpless, desperate, and many of them were forced into that situation after Hurricane Ian.  The most recent wave of insurance increases recently hit those residents in Southwest Florida, causing them to flock to the doctor depressed.

Though the hurricane hit in September 2022, the FEMA maps changed effectively in December 2022, resulting in many residents who were not in flood zones before the hurricane that are now forced to pay flood insurance, or else they face repercussions from their homeowner's insurance and mortgage provider.  Beyond some residents being forced to pay flood insurance unexpectedly, insurance rates in the area have at least doubled, with one resident saying she paid around $3800 before the hurricane, which is now nearly $8000 after the hurricane, not including her newly required flood insurance, a couple grand more.  When she bought her house in December 2018, her mortgage and escrow payments were a little over $700, and her most recent bill is now more than $1600 a month, more than double from 2018.

This resident, who preferred to stay anonymous, said she wants to sell her house, as she cannot afford the new payment; however, she is forced to continue to fight with the insurance company simply to make her house livable again.  Now in year two after the hurricane, she is still in litigation, which prevents her from selling her house, and as the insurance company deemed it uninhabitable, she cannot live in her house, cannot rent it out, cannot sell it, and is forced to pay to live elsewhere while still struggling to pay for her home that she cannot live in, adding to feelings of hopelessness and despair.  Unfortunately, many Southwest Florida residents are still in similar situations, as insurance companies drag their feet, knowing that FEMA will not be issuing any more funds for that disaster after March.

These insurance rate hikes are not isolated to Southwest Florida, as many insurance companies have raised their rates throughout the entire state of Florida, with some folding all together, leaving residents with no more homeowner's insurance, being forced to pay higher rates at other companies.  Some insurance providers have required flood insurance for all residents of Florida, regardless of flood zone.  This has resulted in many residents being angry: "if we didn't flood in the last hurricane, why pay now?"

Not surprisingly, this has led to a mass Florida exodus, where even longtime residents are flocking out of the state in search of lower insurance rates and cost of living elsewhere.  However, in the case of those who are still stuck in litigation, being forced to pay for their homes as well as to live elsewhere while they fight to make their house livable again, many have their hands tied, unable to make a move.  These are the people with the highest risk of suicide, as they feel stuck, forced into a situation they didn't want to be in, with no timeline of when it will end, as insurance companies continue to play stall tactics.

One resident is waiting for help from FEMA, who is waiting for her insurance company to respond to their request.  FEMA told her to contact the Florida Bar Association, so she did.  Speaking with the Florida Bar Association, as well as her lawyer, everyone is waiting on the insurance company.  Who can force the hand of the insurance company to respond, or do they simply have carte blanche to do as they want, knowing that they are purposely stalling with the approaching FEMA deadline?

This is considered duress by forcing people into mental anguish.  It creates despair, feelings of helplessness, and ultimately, suicidal tendencies.  If insurance delays are not worth your loved ones committing suicide over, then who is going to step in to help this situation from getting worse?

One single female resident said her insurance company told her water had been driven into her walls and ceilings, and they arranged for a mold remediation company to remove her walls and ceilings, assuring her that her house could be fixed in a few weeks.  After the remediation company removed her walls and ceilings, as greenlighted by her insurance company, her adjuster called to tell her that she's not getting any more money, that she better plan to whore herself out and live in the homeless shelter to get her house fixed.  Livid, she called her insurance company, only to hear that they had no record of the call, as the adjuster called from their cell, and in fact, that adjuster no longer worked for the company, nor was his agency any longer a contractor for the insurance company, resulting in her retaining an attorney.

Another resident recalled how the insurance company kept switching adjusters, which limited any forward motion, as insurance companies can switch adjusters each day.  Each adjuster would have a delay tactic, which varied from a family member dying, to the adjuster having COVID, to now various family members had COVID and they had to care for them, and just about any excuse for people to be out of the office and not returning phone calls as they should.  After talking with many area residents, these tactics were not used at just one company, but many.

There are games that are played like this behind the scenes, created to make people feel sorry for their adjuster and the insurance company, not realizing that this is simply a delay tactic for them paying.  Of course, there are even more games played by contractors, as many residents have horror stories of hiring out of the area contractors who do a less than stellar job and then are nowhere to be found.  Let's not mention the increase of home thefts from various adjusters and contractors having access to houses, as the local news stations have reported a number of cases not just in places like Fort Myers Beach, but the less talked about areas like Port Charlotte, North Port, and Punta Gorda, who also got hit hard by Ian.

Hurricane Ian might not be the hot topic in the news these days, but residents who were hit by the storm continue to struggle to recover.  Being walloped by insurance rates that more than doubled in some areas, as well as newly required flood insurance for many residents, has literally priced many people out of their homes, resulting in the most inventory on the real estate market since 2019.  The height of prices was in June 2022, with a steady bell curve downward since, officially making this area a buyer's market.

Area residents wonder if they can restrict how much property taxes increase each year for homeowners, why can't there by a limit of how much insurance rates increase each year?  With many people facing more than double their monthly living expenses, people want to leave.  For those still stuck fighting with insurance, unable to sell, rent, or live in their houses, being forced to pay to live elsewhere in addition to their normal living expenses, those feelings of desperation can turn into suicidal tendencies, which increases the risk while driving, as people might purposely swerve to cause accidents, hoping to end it.

Los residentes del área se preguntan si pueden restringir cuánto aumentan los impuestos a la propiedad cada año para los propietarios de viviendas, ¿por qué no puede alguien limitar cuánto aumentan las tarifas de seguro cada año?  Dado que muchas personas se enfrentan a más del doble de sus gastos de manutención mensuales, la gente quiere irse.  Para aquellos que todavía están atrapados luchando con el seguro, incapaces de vender, alquilar o vivir en sus casas, viéndose obligados a pagar para vivir en otro lugar además de sus gastos de vida normales, esos sentimientos de desesperación pueden convertirse en suicidios lo que aumenta el riesgo mientras se conduce, ya que las personas pueden desviarse deliberadamente para causar accidentes, con la esperanza de acabar con él.

Desperation causes desperate people to do desperate things.  Be mindful of this; hopefully, someone steps in to put an end to this sick game before more area residents kill themselves.  At what point will these insurance companies be held accountable?

Classic Suicidal Tendencies: Tendencias suicidas clásicas

Even though my first guitar instructor turned me onto the band when I was about 13-years-old, it’s one thing to hear someone, versus talk to them face-to-face. Sometimes, people don’t look the same in person, or you’d simply never expect to run into them, as was my case.  Perhaps it’s best to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

A pesar de que mi primer instructor de guitarra me convirtió en la banda cuando tenía unos 13 años, una cosa es escuchar a alguien, en lugar de hablar con él cara a cara. A veces, la gente no se ve igual en persona, o simplemente nunca esperarías encontrarte con ellos, como fue mi caso. Tal vez sea mejor ser consciente de lo que te rodea en todo momento.

This particular incident took place in the walking mall in Denver.  Not being from the area, I was looking for something, walking up to random people and asking them, and not having much luck.  I saw this dude that had long, dark hair, wearing a leather vest, and black jeans, and I asked him the same as other people I had randomly quizzed.

Este incidente en particular tuvo lugar en el centro comercial peatonal de Denver. Al no ser de la zona, estaba buscando algo, me acerqué a personas al azar y les preguntaba, y no tenía mucha suerte. Vi a un tipo que tenía el pelo largo y oscuro, llevaba un chaleco de cuero y vaqueros negros, y le pregunté lo mismo que otras personas a las que había interrogado al azar.

The guy smiled at me jokingly. “Yeah, but you’re from here. Don’t you know?”

“I’m not from here!”  That was the bait, and I took it hook, line, and sinker, rambling about how I was only in town touring on Ozzfest, explaining how I was a journalist who was just asked to join the tour as a Harley Girl.  He let me go on about myself like I was cool, only further digging a hole for myself.

"¡No soy de aquí!" Ese fue el cebo, y lo tomé gancho, línea y plomo, divagando sobre cómo solo estaba en la ciudad de gira en Ozzfest, explicando cómo era una periodista a la que se le acaba de pedir que se uniera a la gira como Harley Girl. So polite, he waited for me to finish my spiel, before smiling, “I’m on Ozzfest, too.”  I probably did a hard gulp at that point, realizing I didn’t know who I was talking to after dark in the middle of the walking mall. “Have you ever heard of a band called Suicidal Tendencies?”

Tan educado que esperó a que terminara mi spiel, antes de sonreír: "Yo también estoy en el Ozzfest". Of course I had heard of Suicidal Tendencies, and just like their song said, “got to kill Captain Stupid,” I was feeling like I had lured myself into the stupid trap. I could only blame myself. As much as I just bragged how I was a music journalist, I knew that band was not on tour that year, so it did not automatically click in yet.

Por supuesto que había oído hablar de tendencias suicidas, y al igual que su canción decía, "tenía que matar al Capitán Estúpido", me sentía como si me hubiera metido en la estúpida trampa. Solo podía culparme a mí mismo. Por mucho que me jacte de que era un periodista musical, sabía que esa banda no estaba de gira ese año, así que aún no hizo clic automáticamente.

Now, I had been starstruck a couple times before, and let me assure you, this was not that, as I was clueless who he was at first. When he told me, I was so embarrassed, I wanted to crawl in a hole and hide.  He was so calm and nonchalant, taking great amusement in watching my disposition change with the realization of who he was.

Ahora, había sido golpeado por las estrellas un par de veces antes, y déjame asegurarte que esto no era eso, ya que no tenía ni idea de quién era al principio. “I play bass for Ozzy,” he smiled, “and in this band called Black Label Society with Zakk Wylde.” He wasn’t just in one band, but the two main headlining bands, playing back-to-back each night on tour that year.  “If you’re a journalist, you might have heard of them,” and that was like the mail in the coffin; just send me out to sea to float away.

"Toco el bajo para Ozzy", sonrió, "y en esta banda llamada Black Label Society con Zakk Wylde". Considering he was getting more stage time than most other musicians, I should have known him. He was so nice, and I was so embarrassed. He invited me to join him at the Hard Rock Cafe just a few feet away, and when we walked in, everyone from both of his bands, save Ozzy, was there, further making me feel totally embarrassed and uncomfortable to the point that I had to go.

Teniendo en cuenta que estaba teniendo más tiempo en el escenario que la mayoría de los otros músicos, debería haberlo conocido. Él era tan amable, y yo estaba tan avergonzado. I should have rocked it and hung out, but I slunk out the door, too embarrassed to stay.  Though I snuck out, Robert Trujillo did not seem to forget about the incident, finding it quite amusing.  Since we were on tour together, he didn’t let me forget it either.

It’s like he would see me coming from a mile away, waiting to catch me when I’d be in a hurry, not paying attention, trying to run from one side of the Ampitheatre to the other.  I’d look up, and he’d always have the silliest unexpected funny faces inches away.  I couldn’t help but stop to laugh, which always makes work better when you can catch a quick, unexpected, innocent giggle.

Es como si me viera venir desde una milla de distancia, esperando a atraparme cuando tuviera prisa, sin prestar atención, tratando de correr de un lado del Anfiteatro al otro. Miraba hacia arriba, y siempre tenía las caras divertidas más tontas e inesperadas a centímetros de distancia. Since then, I’ve caught him playing with BLS briefly, before he rocketed into Metallica like the missing link.  Honored the band gave me a press pass for their Orion Festival on Belle Isle in Detroit, I had another unexpected moment running into James Hetfield starting up a race car, which I was able to capture on video.  I was also able to see the Suicidal Tendencies spin-off Infectious Grooves, which was pretty cool to say the least. 

Desde entonces, lo he pillado jugando con BLS brevemente, antes de que se lanzara a Metallica como el eslabón perdido. Honrado, la banda me dio un pase de prensa para su Festival de Orion en Belle Isle en Detroit, tuve otro momento inesperado en el que me topé con James Hetfield arrancando un coche de carreras, que pude grabar en vídeo. I’m curious how Tye shreds compared to his dad. I’m also wondering how that Dillinger Escape Plan sound that Ben brings to the table will be like with that Suicidal mesh to hold it together. Loved the Dillinger Escape Plan with Mike Patton from Faith No More, as they do some unexpected sounds that pique my curiosity on this newest blend.

Tengo curiosidad por saber cómo Tye se compara con su padre. También me pregunto cómo será el sonido del plan de escape de Dillinger que Ben trae a la mesa con esa malla suicida para mantenerla unida. Awards for Music Videos and Movies: Premios a Videos Musicales y Películas

For those who have been trying to keep up with the launch of my various film projects this year, I know it's been a challenge.  It all started when someone asked about doing a documentary on my books, which inspired the first documentary that became not only about my books, but about doing pyrotechnics.  That documentary, "Blow It Up," was an award-winner in a couple film festivals, winning for best women's film and women empowerment, which only spurred a few more projects going up for consideration.

Para aquellos que han estado tratando de mantenerse al día con el lanzamiento de mis diversos proyectos cinematográficos este año, sé que ha sido un desafío.  Todo comenzó cuando alguien me pidió que hiciera un documental sobre mis libros, lo que inspiró el primer documental que se convirtió no solo en mis libros, sino en hacer pirotecnia.  Ese documental, "Blow It Up", fue premiado en un par de festivales de cine, ganando por mejor película femenina y empoderamiento femenino, lo que solo estimuló algunos proyectos más que se sometieron a consideración.

The documentary was a semi-finalist, along with the "Birds of Baseball" script.  That particular project, "Birds of Baseball," was selected at a number of film festival, coming in as a semi-finalist and a finalist at various festivals, garnering attention, as it was a children's script written in both English and Spanish.  The other script, "Black Market Doctor," has been doing equally as well on the film festival circuit, though it is on the total opposite end of the spectrum being a horror movie tied into "The Murder House" book series.

To further spin off of the series, "Demons Among Us" is the next project being filmed, and though we are close to being done, we had enough footage to use for a few music videos to promote the movie.  Though a number of bands expressed interest in wanting to work with us, making it extremely difficult to narrow down the selection of talent, the issue of copyright and original music kept being an issue.  As I have been involved in the music industry for a couple of decades now, and I have been known for getting up on stage quite often at the number of concerts I've thrown over the years, it became obvious that making my own original music for the movie would be easier than telling someone what I want.

Teaming up with Joshua Brian Knight, we did a few jam sessions, and I simply tried to tell the storyline that I was trying to portray on the screen with the characters I had.  We were not aiming for perfection, as we wanted the music to have a sort of backwoods feel, almost early Americana, very simple and twisted.  We recorded the first sessions in his living room with Jacqueline Weathers serving brownies.

Jacqueline later would join us for a few scenes in the movie, being one of the first murder victims.  Joshua became a character as well, fitting in with the idea of a couple crazies jamming with a guitar.  Their house is where people were filmed jumping off of the roof and doing other stunt scenes.

Various pieces of the movie were filmed prior to Orlando, but at the Fantasm Horror, Paranormal and Burlesque Convention, we filmed the Demonic Dating Game, using volunteers from the audience and putting them on the spot for some raunchy discussions.  That scene was released on the film festival circuit last night, and with our performances at the convention with Ras Shomari, we had even more music.  Having hours of uncut music, I sorted through to find sections to release as individual songs.

The ones that fit the movie were released first, which is where the titles "Amputation Amongst Friends" and "Zombie Cock Rises" came from, followed by "Where's My Fairytale?"  The Rome Music Video Awards almost instantly selected "Zombie Cock Rises," and though it was a finalist at the Elegant International Film Festival, it was disqualified from competitions in Munich and Michigan for having a little too much nudity, which, given the topic of the song, might have been expected, but it's not a porn.  There's no penetration, but there is a zombie that's a penis and other such nudity, so it's a bit much.

However, the Munich Music Video Awards did select "Where's My Fairytale?" as a finalist, so apparently, they might be more into romance than horror.  Not that the song is a romantic one per say, but it's about as lovey dovey as I am known for.  Hopefully, it makes you laugh a little at least.

Brining in Ras for drumming with Josh was definitely a great combination, even if some of the nerds straight up walked out on us in Orlando.  My brother, who does a lot of fire breathing in the movie, laughs about how things might not have been so perfect at the convention.  Steve Moore, who plays both Dr. Domento and Cuddles in the film, remained optimistic, pointing out that the filming was done, even if it wasn't perfect, and the point was not for it to be perfect, so the footage works regardless.

Things have a way of working out, and when your goal is to be cheesy and comedic in the first place, with enough shock value horror to keep people interested, then it's not about being perfect.  You can tell this is not created by AI, so cheesy works.  There might be a few eyes rolling with groans from the cheese, peppered in with a few scenes that make you gasp unexpectedly, but that's cheesy shock value.

The true test is what the audience thinks.  So far, awards are being handed out, so that must be good.  Not claiming that these are earth shattering, but it's that fun stuff to take your mind off of stress worries.

Renting Electric Cars: Alquiler de coches eléctricos

On a recent trip to California, we rented an electric car, and while there were some interesting bonuses, there were still a few issues that would need to be addressed before electric cars take over for gas ones.  Of all places in the world, we thought California would be the place to rent an electric car, but we did not start out by selecting electric; we opted for a mystery car to rent.  Flying into LAX, by the time we arrived at the car rental facility, there was a long line of people waiting for cars, and we were given the choice of a pickup truck or an electric SUV, which led to us opting for the electric car, thinking we should be good.

Not thrilled about the brand, as it was the same brand some relatives were driving when they were killed by a drunk driver - my father's twin was instantly killed, the next day the 4-year-old daughter died, and the following day, the 8-year-old daughter died, and when they told my grandfather, he had a heart attack and died - thus, I really did not want to like the car brand.  However, I told myself that happened a few years ago, before all this electric technology, so I should be open to giving it a chance.  For the record though, whenever I heard those commercials about people living because they were in a Subaru, I could only think of how my relatives were not that lucky driving that brand, so I'm glad they stopped falsely leading ads.

A bit reluctant, I had heard other friends gush about how much they liked their Subaru cars, so we bit the bullet and went for it.  Like I said, I really wanted to not like it, but there were a few features that won me over.  Specifically, I did like the safety features like it showing when a car was in the lane next to you, and I definitely loved the all-around cameras that showed not just the back, but how close the front bumper was to hitting a curb or the car in front of you when you're trying to parallel park in a busy city like LA.

When it came to "filling up," that's where the games began.  At the car rental facility, the guy warned us that we could not use any Tesla charging stations.  "It will blow up the battery, so use these places."

He gave us the names of three different charging stations that were preferred, so we would not blow up the battery, an issue that we didn't even know we would have to be concerned about.  However, it was easy enough to search in our phones where the closest places were, and he assured us, "most hotels have charging stations here.  Don't worry, you should be fine," which is always famous last words.

When we picked the car up, it was at 90%, and no matter how much we charged it, we never got it to go over 91%, which made us wonder if the battery life starts to die in electric cars the way they do with my electric lawn mower.  In other words, at first, the battery lasts a long time, but over time, the more you use it, that battery life gets a smaller and smaller.  My lawn mower battery started out holding five hours of charge, for example, but now, you're lucky if you can get half an hour out of it with charging.

That charge basically showed a couple hundred miles we could drive, but if you've ever been to Los Angeles, you might recall there's a little bit of traffic there.  Concerned we would run out of charge on the highway, we were assured that the battery has a saver mode to prevent things like that hopefully.  Still, we didn't want to take a chance, so as soon as we were down to 70%, we were ready to charge it.

Looking in the phone, we saw that a Walmart had a charging station, and, being our first time trying it out, we learned that it's only one car per charging station, not one car on each side, even if they have two plugs.  The two different plugs are for different types of charging outlets, not necessarily to be able to charge two cars at once.  Plus, when looking at the plugs, depending on the brand of the charging station, there's fast plugs and slower technology ones that will make you wait for a whole lot longer.

This first charging station was rather quick and inexpensive, calming our ruffled feathers a bit.  It only cost around $5 to get about 10% charge, and it took a little over 20 minutes, which spoiled us into thinking they would all be that fast.  Let's compare that to the hotel charging station, where for the same 10% charge, it cost more than $40 and took more than four hours; not all chargers are equal.

At the hotel, we had to wait for the charging station that was not Tesla brand, as there were only a couple, and one had a Tesla parked in it that was not even being charged, like they just wanted a close parking spot to the door of the hotel.  So, we had to wait for the one other one, as the Tesla owner never moved from their pole position, and as soon as we started charging, another guy pulled up behind us, asking how long we would be, as he was renting an electric car for the first time as well.  Literally, we had to coordinate our watches, planning to meet outside at 5:45, so we could swap without anyone else trying to get to the charger before this old guy, as he was nervous about how the whole thing worked.

That was easy enough to do, even though we learned very quickly that downtown hotels charge a premium for the convenience of being able to charge when you're spending the night there.  The next two hotels did not offer charging stations, and the last hotel was nice enough to call the hotels nearby to see if they had charging stations, but none of them offered such a luxury to their guests, and this is LA!

Tell me how this would be in the middle of the cornfield country in like Iowa.  When you're in the mountains of Wyoming, how many chargers are there?  There's a lot of rural areas in this country, and if LA can't even place enough charging stations, then how is it like in the rest of the country to charge?

What I do know is that since the hotel did not have a charging station, the night before we had to bring the car back, we would up driving to more than half a dozen charging stations, and none of them were operational.  Maybe it was because it was after midnight, as we had been held late by our last engagement in LA, and we were trying to charge that late at night, because it seemed like a lot of them only worked during certain hours, which is not at all convenient when driving around after midnight.

Driving into usually crowded shopping places like malls and grocery stores, we were led to random parking garages, zooming up all the way to the top to find these chargers, we found that the majority of them were vandalized and not working, which did not help us.  Same thing at a few various locations, as whoever thought it was cute to break them, and nobody ever fixed them to work.  If these are not being maintained in a working order, how is that helpful to anyone trying to charge?

Sometimes, you get all the way to the point where you put in your credit card, and the whole thing just freezes.  You're not sure if it's working or not.  Can they steal your credit card info at these chargers the same way they can at a gas station pump, because it certainly made us wonder and get a lil paranoid.

We drove more than 50 miles to more than half a dozen charging stations, only to find that not one of them worked.  We barely made it back to the rental facility, and when we told them we were not able to charge it, telling them our story, they were not really phased, like they had heard it before.  They didn't charge us for not having it charged the way they would if you didn't fill it with gas, which was nice.

While the brand was able to win me over a little more, the SUV having more get up and go than expected, ample plugs for charging phones and whatnot, the whole experience with lack of working charging stations at night was enough to make us realize that there's a lot more technology that's needed across the country, before these electric cars are viable widespread.  Hearing places like New Jersey trying to ban gas powered cars is laughable after this experience, but maybe New Jersey has better charging options than California?  It's a cool option if you have your own charging port at home, which you would basically have to put in after this experience, but if you're on a long road trip across the country, which I am definitely known for doing, how viable is an electric car option at this point?

I think Fisker Karma has it right by installing the solar charging options.  More manufacturers should be exploring this option, as charging stations still have a lot of glitches to figure out.  If all are not created equal, and you have to worry about blowing up batteries by using one brand instead of another brand, then there's still a lot of technical bugs that need to be worked out across the board apparently.

While the technology is cool, and some features are awesome, there's still a ways to go before this whole country can consider only electric vehicles.  A hybrid option might be interesting, but as for fully electric, it's buyer beware.  For long road trips, people are getting the gas converters that use gasoline to get you extra charge for your battery, so if this is an option people are using, we are still using gas.

Si bien la tecnología es genial y algunas características son increíbles, todavía hay un camino por recorrer antes de que todo este país pueda considerar solo vehículos eléctricos.  Una opción híbrida puede ser interesante, pero en cuanto a la electricidad total, hay que tener cuidado con el comprador.  Para viajes largos por carretera, la gente está comprando los convertidores de gasolina que usan gasolina para obtener una carga adicional para su batería, por lo que si esta es una opción que la gente está usando, todavía estamos usando gasolina.

In other words, in all your attempts to go green, you still might have to default to gas to charge your electric car.  That's the irony of it.  I'd love to say that this is the best green option for everyone in the world to go to, but obviously, the gas is still needed, and we still have a ways to go on this technology. 

En otras palabras, en todos sus intentos de ser ecológico, es posible que aún tenga que usar gasolina para cargar su automóvil eléctrico.  Esa es la ironía de todo esto.  Me encantaría decir que esta es la mejor opción ecológica para todos en el mundo, pero obviamente, el gas sigue siendo necesario y todavía tenemos mucho camino por recorrer con esta tecnología.
