Suicides Increase with Insurance Rates: Los suicidios aumentan con las tarifas de los seguros

Speaking with a doctor in North Port, FL, earlier this month, he mentioned all of his patients that day were people who had been recently priced out of their homes.  They were feeling helpless, desperate, and many of them were forced into that situation after Hurricane Ian.  The most recent wave of insurance increases recently hit those residents in Southwest Florida, causing them to flock to the doctor depressed.

Though the hurricane hit in September 2022, the FEMA maps changed effectively in December 2022, resulting in many residents who were not in flood zones before the hurricane that are now forced to pay flood insurance, or else they face repercussions from their homeowner's insurance and mortgage provider.  Beyond some residents being forced to pay flood insurance unexpectedly, insurance rates in the area have at least doubled, with one resident saying she paid around $3800 before the hurricane, which is now nearly $8000 after the hurricane, not including her newly required flood insurance, a couple grand more.  When she bought her house in December 2018, her mortgage and escrow payments were a little over $700, and her most recent bill is now more than $1600 a month, more than double from 2018.

This resident, who preferred to stay anonymous, said she wants to sell her house, as she cannot afford the new payment; however, she is forced to continue to fight with the insurance company simply to make her house livable again.  Now in year two after the hurricane, she is still in litigation, which prevents her from selling her house, and as the insurance company deemed it uninhabitable, she cannot live in her house, cannot rent it out, cannot sell it, and is forced to pay to live elsewhere while still struggling to pay for her home that she cannot live in, adding to feelings of hopelessness and despair.  Unfortunately, many Southwest Florida residents are still in similar situations, as insurance companies drag their feet, knowing that FEMA will not be issuing any more funds for that disaster after March.

These insurance rate hikes are not isolated to Southwest Florida, as many insurance companies have raised their rates throughout the entire state of Florida, with some folding all together, leaving residents with no more homeowner's insurance, being forced to pay higher rates at other companies.  Some insurance providers have required flood insurance for all residents of Florida, regardless of flood zone.  This has resulted in many residents being angry: "if we didn't flood in the last hurricane, why pay now?"

Not surprisingly, this has led to a mass Florida exodus, where even longtime residents are flocking out of the state in search of lower insurance rates and cost of living elsewhere.  However, in the case of those who are still stuck in litigation, being forced to pay for their homes as well as to live elsewhere while they fight to make their house livable again, many have their hands tied, unable to make a move.  These are the people with the highest risk of suicide, as they feel stuck, forced into a situation they didn't want to be in, with no timeline of when it will end, as insurance companies continue to play stall tactics.

One resident is waiting for help from FEMA, who is waiting for her insurance company to respond to their request.  FEMA told her to contact the Florida Bar Association, so she did.  Speaking with the Florida Bar Association, as well as her lawyer, everyone is waiting on the insurance company.  Who can force the hand of the insurance company to respond, or do they simply have carte blanche to do as they want, knowing that they are purposely stalling with the approaching FEMA deadline?

This is considered duress by forcing people into mental anguish.  It creates despair, feelings of helplessness, and ultimately, suicidal tendencies.  If insurance delays are not worth your loved ones committing suicide over, then who is going to step in to help this situation from getting worse?

One single female resident said her insurance company told her water had been driven into her walls and ceilings, and they arranged for a mold remediation company to remove her walls and ceilings, assuring her that her house could be fixed in a few weeks.  After the remediation company removed her walls and ceilings, as greenlighted by her insurance company, her adjuster called to tell her that she's not getting any more money, that she better plan to whore herself out and live in the homeless shelter to get her house fixed.  Livid, she called her insurance company, only to hear that they had no record of the call, as the adjuster called from their cell, and in fact, that adjuster no longer worked for the company, nor was his agency any longer a contractor for the insurance company, resulting in her retaining an attorney.

Another resident recalled how the insurance company kept switching adjusters, which limited any forward motion, as insurance companies can switch adjusters each day.  Each adjuster would have a delay tactic, which varied from a family member dying, to the adjuster having COVID, to now various family members had COVID and they had to care for them, and just about any excuse for people to be out of the office and not returning phone calls as they should.  After talking with many area residents, these tactics were not used at just one company, but many.

There are games that are played like this behind the scenes, created to make people feel sorry for their adjuster and the insurance company, not realizing that this is simply a delay tactic for them paying.  Of course, there are even more games played by contractors, as many residents have horror stories of hiring out of the area contractors who do a less than stellar job and then are nowhere to be found.  Let's not mention the increase of home thefts from various adjusters and contractors having access to houses, as the local news stations have reported a number of cases not just in places like Fort Myers Beach, but the less talked about areas like Port Charlotte, North Port, and Punta Gorda, who also got hit hard by Ian.

Hurricane Ian might not be the hot topic in the news these days, but residents who were hit by the storm continue to struggle to recover.  Being walloped by insurance rates that more than doubled in some areas, as well as newly required flood insurance for many residents, has literally priced many people out of their homes, resulting in the most inventory on the real estate market since 2019.  The height of prices was in June 2022, with a steady bell curve downward since, officially making this area a buyer's market.

Area residents wonder if they can restrict how much property taxes increase each year for homeowners, why can't there by a limit of how much insurance rates increase each year?  With many people facing more than double their monthly living expenses, people want to leave.  For those still stuck fighting with insurance, unable to sell, rent, or live in their houses, being forced to pay to live elsewhere in addition to their normal living expenses, those feelings of desperation can turn into suicidal tendencies, which increases the risk while driving, as people might purposely swerve to cause accidents, hoping to end it.

Hurricane Ian Diary 5: Huracán Ian Diario 5

 After being sick for two weeks, it was like emerging from a cocoon, as I had been on self-quarantine, not wanting to get anyone sick.  At first, leaving the house was like a new adventure, as the military posts were packing up, no longer offering the free food, though many still had water and ice, which was nice.  It's not like the whole thing cleaned itself up in that time, but progress was being made in the form of these huge, oversized double trash containers on wheels with a huge crane attached to grab massive fallen trees.

Sometimes, it takes some destruction and going to a new location for transformation to begin.  When a neighbor asked if I would drive his car up to Michigan, I was not opposed to leaving for a bit while things got back in order, especially after having to visit my doctor on the front porch of his destroyed office, getting tested by the pond along the back of his destroyed building, and realizing that we would not even send in prescriptions, as most of the pharmacies I used were destroyed or simply not open yet.  First, I had to go get the car up in St. Petersburg, and I couldn't leave for that far, until I could actually get gas.

Once more than one gas station had opened up, driving up to St. Petersburg, I was apprehensive, not knowing what further destruction I would see.  In the aftermath of a natural disaster, you simply expect the entire rest of the world to look as destroyed as your own neighborhood, but once I actually left, and drove north on the highway, the signs of destruction simply grew less and less, until like nothing happened.  Getting out of the car in St. Petersburg, meeting my friend, I couldn't help but comment how their trees still had leaves, and there were still visible flowers, not like in Port Charlotte, where it was definitely looking more like Halloween with the barren trees and not much green but the grass.

It's like I had blinders on, and I was only used to seeing the post-hurricane destruction.  Getting back to the real world, where people had already moved on from the hurricane drama, was shocking to me.  It's like everyone else had already moved on, turned it into old news, not realizing how things still looked.

Once the realization set in that since St. Petersburg looked fine, the rest of the country should be okay as well, that gave me the confidence to drive to Michigan.  Packing up the cats, grabbing the essentials, that drive seemed longer than normal, perhaps since I was still fighting feeling better, something my former fiance yelled at me about.  I say former, because when he said I was too concerned about my health and my house getting destroyed, for me, that was enough to call off the engagement.

Yes, I thought my house was fine, as the roof was still on, until the insurance adjuster brought the water camera over and explained that I had water standing in my walls and ceiling.  They had talked about destroying and rebuilding nearly half the home, to the point that looking at new houses came up.  Still unsure of what's going on with it, I though that and my health was reason to be concerned, and being with someone who is not concerned about me going through a Cat. 5 hurricane is enough to call it quits.

Seeing how my contract with MLB ended, I guess that makes me a free agent in all respects.  No, I still cannot say what team I was working with, but I can say that a lot of the stadiums we had been playing at in Southwest Florida are not quite the same as they were back in August, which breaks my heart.  I do not think anyone knows how next spring training will be yet, as the northern stadiums are probably fine, compared to the southern Florida stadiums that look like giants ripped through the roofs and tore up seating, tossing aluminum around in massive piles that would make most scrappers grab their trailers.

One thing I will say is that it was true to the era, featuring things like lobotomies, deprivation chambers, electroshock therapy and all those wonderful tools that not all that long ago were considered totally acceptable treatment.  Who cares about the insane when they can perform brain surgeries on them?  Truth is stranger than fiction, and if you want a dose of haunted truth, then Eloise Asylum will make you forget about how bad you thought you had it compared to the many who checked in and never left.

I will say this was almost as much fun as standing in a flock of geese on the move at Calder's Dairy.  Almost as fun, because Calder's always has awesome ice cream.  It wasn't quite so fun to have to get towed from a smart car's battering smoking there, but the ice cream is always awesome, just FYI.

 Don’t trust anything in the fridge or freezer to still be good. Day four of being sick as a dog. Still struggling to hold down water.

Best hurricane game to play when you cannot even hold water down is sort through the rancid food in the fridge and freezer. Everything gets tossed, and it gives you time to uncover things you forgot you had, like damn I wish I knew that smoothie was in there. Toss the expensive organic stuff.

Everything is puffy, wet and slimy. Cardboard boxes disintegrate when grabbed. Put it all in the neighbor’s trash.

Game today was float in overly shocked pool n try to lazily chase a few leaves. That pool is green, and the filter is shot. I am acting as the filter right now, and not a very good one.

It dawned on me that my FCL baseball coverage was probably some of the last pictures of the stadiums in tact. Though I have not driven to all the stadiums, Charlotte Sports Park looks like an angry giant tore through it, ripping up stadium seats and tearing off roofing. Still have until Thanksgiving before I am allowed to say which team I was working with this year.

The highlight of the day was having a filmmaker reach out to me, asking if I might be up for them doing a documentary on my books. Not sure if it will turn into anything or not, but always nice to know that people notice. Guess we shall see what the future holds.

Hurricane Ian Diary 2: Huracán Ian Diario 2

 After rocking and rolling through Hurricane Ian, wondering if the tree on the house would crash through the ceiling or if the roof would continue to hold it, watching the sliders and windows breathing back and forth during the storm, the winds of the storm may have finally died down, the rain stopped, but dangers are still lurking around every corner.  For those who keep asking when the electricity will be on, understand that Charlotte's power grid was fried, and take a peek down any road to see trees on lines.  Massive trees that took decades to grow toppled over, roots now facing the sky, resting on power lines.

First, those trees have to be cut up, removed, lines repaired and replaced, then we can connect.  Unless you happen to know a giant who could simply bend down and pick up all those trees like toothpicks, it might take us small humans a little bit to contend with all the tree that look like fallen dominos.  Fallen trees are only fraction of the problem, as there's parts of houses wrapped in electrical lines, too.

Let's not talk about the plethora of trailer parks that were simply blown to smithereens.  The road behind the trailer park is littered with aluminum crumpled up like discarded tissues.  You can see through where some of the trailers used to be, and it makes you wonder how many people did not evacuate, that were alone, and are simply yet to be discovered, most likely dead inside the dwellings.

The good news is that some of the stores are opening.  The bad news is that if you thought the shortages from the pandemic were over, you are sorely mistaken.  There's lots of empty shelves in the stores.

Hope you didn't think you were going to get that glass of milk, coffee creamer, some protein to cook with your favorite choice meats, as that's just not happening.  If you're lucky, you might be able to get a can of chicken noodle soup to drink at room temperature.  Natural gas is not common in Florida, so most people do not have gas stoves at home to cook with; if you're lucky, you may have a grill.

Now is about the time when you are picking through your freezer that has surely been leaking all different colors of slimy goo onto your floors.  If you have any meat that is even remotely still cold, and you are lucky enough to have propane for the grill, then it's time to start chowing.  While you might have thought that you were going to lose weight during the hurricane, it's more like hurry up and eat whatever frozen stuff is still good, from those ice cream bars to that standing rib roast and chicken.

Time to prioritize the freezer food.  What gets eaten, and what gets thrown out?  Guess the most expensive meats go on the grill, slurp the melted ice cream, and toss that bag of Brussel sprouts.

Sure, most people would argue that the Brussel sprouts are the healthy option that should be eaten, but when it's a frozen bag of steamer style, unless you have the grill, are you really going to much the slightly icy in the middle and mushy on the outside Brussel sprouts if you can drink melted ice cream?  Healthy foods do not always win out when it comes down to those types of choices.  They should, but don't, not always, maybe in a few cases, as there's always exceptions to the rule, but you can imagine.

Oh, did you think that you wanted to try to get some gas?  Two nights in a row, I tried to stop, but the pumps were already off before curfew at both gas stations in town that supposedly had gas.  Thinking I would stop by this morning before work, I did not expect to see the Oshkosh trucks with military guys keeping the peace for the humungous line of people holding gas cans wrapped around the building.

I'm finally getting a few feeble messages from friends that are trapped in their houses from flooding.  While the desire to rescue them is there, the resources are not, so they are merely waiting for the waters to recede, excited that their 5G finally kicked on, wondering when they can get their prescriptions.  That's a lot better that the scuba crews that are counting the dead bodies they discover in flooded places.

Finalmente estoy recibiendo algunos mensajes débiles de amigos que están atrapados en sus casas por las inundaciones. Lots of people are using this as an excuse to drink, as there's not much else to do.  There's constantly comments that this is like a war zone, with people from out of town not knowing to stop at intersections where the stop signs have blown away, causing all kinds of accidents on top of all the destruction.  There's so many sirens that make the old people nervous, but in reality, a lot are out of town crews that simply do not want to wait in traffic, so they just flip on the lights and sirens to get past the clusters.

While there might be some locals that hate all the out of town traffic jams, I am glad to see some of the out of towners here to try to help.  The electrical contractors are piling in, as I saw one truck from Ohio following a cherry picker style electrical truck from Philadelphia.  Hey, get the power back on, friends!

Sure, there's some that are price gouging.  We had one out of towner stop by with an offer to help get the tree off the roof that was two and a half times more what our local guy had quoted.  That's an example just from our experience yesterday, but talking to others, they have way worse tales of it.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, sure.  However, just because there is a tree resting on our roof does not mean that we are willing to pay more than double for instant gratification.  Keep in mind, there are plenty of others who are willing to pay any hefty amount, so they nicely went down the road.

While there's so many people I talk to from out of town who are saying they'd like to help down here, by the time they actually stop talking about, get packed up and start moving, there's a flood of others that have already found their way here.  People are living out of their cars, staying with friends, finding themselves newly homeless from the hurricane, yet when all these people get down here, it's not like all the hotels are open up either.  There's more car dwellers than ever, as the actual dwellings blew away.

Hurricane games remain in full effect, as people get even more creative with their bets between each other.  Whether it's betting if a building is still there or not, whether a store has a item in stock or not, or if you will be able to find a place to charge up or not, people have even been betting on how long it will take them to travel down 41 with the various closures that are still being announced.  My friends trapped in their houses from flood are betting on how many days til the water is low enough for them to be able to get out and into the light of day again, taking bets on how the outside world looks, as they still have not even been able to get out of their houses and are simply guessing on how things look.

When they asked if all the street lights were still out, I explained that most were.  They blocked off intersections, so you cannot make left turns.  At night, they put a thin line of caution tape across the intersection and hang a few blue glow sticks on it, you know, the dimmest color of all the glow sticks?

That way, when granny and gramps are not only medicated but have been drinking, and they cannot see at night with their Catarax, glaucoma, or whatever retina issues they got going on, they can plow through that like they are crossing the finish line at race.  Other police forces think they can plow through, too.  Yesterday, one officer had his back to the caution tape, trying his best to direct traffic, not paying attention to the cop car blowing through the caution tape behind him, but luckily I saw, was able to get the attention of the guy directing traffic, pointing frantically behind him, so he could jump out of the way, the other cop car clearing him by a few mere inches, making both of our hearts race a little.
