Haunted Houses Compared: Casas encantadas comparadas

As Halloween is one of my favorites, we had to go to a couple haunted houses in Michigan, and comparing the two is like comparing a couple different flavors of ice cream, as they both had completely different flavors of spookiness.  I'm not going to say that one is better than the other, as both of them had different levels of scare, so to speak, with Eloise Asylum brining the actual haunted location, on the books, with a documented history; whereas, Azra Haunt featured more of the new age scares for people.  The spookiness of an old asylum brings about different feelings than a warehouse with different textures, feels, popups, 3-D glasses and black light reflective scares that people will also appreciate for a fall scare.

Como Halloween es uno de mis favoritos, tuvimos que ir a un par de casas embrujadas en Michigan, y comparar las dos es como comparar un par de sabores diferentes de helado, ya que ambos tenían sabores espeluznantes completamente diferentes. Eloise Asylum was the first one that we went to, with our group consisting of Sheree and Billie, as well as myself.  Previously, we had gone to a number of other area haunted houses, but these two were new for us this year.  We were excited to check out Eloise Asylum, as it's put on by a family favorite, Alice Cooper.

In comparison to Phil Anselmo's House of Shock in New Orleans, this was a completely different feel, as Phil brought more of that New Orleans and souther bayou spicy flavor.  There were no massive snakes jumping out at the Asylum like there was in New Orleans.  However, I will say that House of Shock still had one of my favorite openings, having a guy ziplining down as a dark priest taking over with fire.

Surprisingly, Eloise Asylum did not have an over the top introduction, opting more for the natural environment to be scary enough.  Not far outside of Detroit, in an abandoned asylum that was so big that it used to have its own area code, some of my friends absolutely refused to go to it at all.  One said, "you don't understand, my aunt died there, as she got to know a nurse who gave her too many meds when she was depressed, and she literally checked in and never checked out, committing suidicde."

Hearing stuff like that, real stories from real people I know, only sets the tone when walking up, seeing all the blown out glass windows on the building next door, which fits in with that creepy Detroit at night vibe where you just want to pick up the pace, as you don't know who is watching you at night.  The creepiness was a simple manikin illuminated in an abandoned room to get your attention.  There's some razor wire walking into the entrance, and that's when you see a slight carnival theme with a few different varieties of food trucks, though that could have been played up more with other vendors.

Compare that entrance to Azra Haunt, and sorry, but that wait blows the other out of the water.  They had a few different fire dancers and flowbies with glowing objects to dance and entertain, complete with a DJ spinning tunes, some cool laser lights, a fog machine, and places to take pictures.  The wait to get inside was at least entertaining, and maybe it was going on Devil's Night that had a lot of other patrons dressing up in skimpy outfits and scary stuff that only added to the effect of the attraction.

In all fainess, Eloise Asylum did have an entertaining wait area, but it was not until you were waiting to get into the second haunted portion of the attraction, going into the basement of the asylum.  That's where they had the freak show hidden, with a guy crazy enough to screw things into his face and hammer nails up his nose.  It's a different flavor of entertainment from the fire dancers at Azra Haunt, so that's why I don't want to say one is better than the other, as one person might be freaked out by fire, especially if they experienced a house fire or something, while others may have a fear of needles.

Eloise Asylum also had a picture taking area at the end, as opposed to the beginning like Azra Haunt.  Azra did have a few different areas set up for pictures though, featuring a dragon up front, a creepy zombie lady to take pictures with, as well as a couple different skeleton features for pictures.  Eloise had a big monster at the end holding a victim upside down, which was cool, but after that, they had the video option where a camera goes around you as you dance for a video shoot oppoturnity, very cool.

Once inside, these haunted houses varied considerably.  Eloise Asylum had the very specific storyline sticking to the old asylum, with most props being stuff found inside the acutal asylum, such as a hallway of old filing cabinets, old offices still set up from former doctors, and a plethora of props true to what had taken place there, from frontal lobotomies and varies brain surgeries, to desensitization chambers, electroshock therapy and so many other archaic procedures that people found totally acceptable to cure whatever ails you, like hysteria in women, as it's better to be a vegetable drooling on yourself than to have an opinion on something in life, so these cure-alls cured just about everything.

As a reminder, it wasn't all that long ago that these things were prefectly acceptable treatments.  Knowing someong who had a frontal lobotomy in the mid-eighties, convinced that it would cure her epilepsy, this was a lady who was left confined to a wheelchair after the surgery and died shortly thereafter, this that happened in my lifetime, as I recall seeing her in her wheelchair before she died.  Who thinks in a few years that people will look back on all the pills being pushed on people, kinda like they are doing already, and when will they say that wasn't a good idea afterall either, as isn't a lot of psychology really more like guinea pig-ology of try this, and if that didn't work, will this one work???

Como recordatorio, no fue hace tanto tiempo que estas cosas eran tratamientos perfectamente aceptables. The real scare of the Eloise Asylum is that a lot of the stuff scaring you is stuff that really went down in the building, documented, on the books, along with actual death records from actual people in the area.  Walking through there is more sombering than anything, like a cold shower of a reminder that there's actual ghosts of people who were tortured against their will and died in the name of knowing science.  It makes your stomach churn into knots, as you wonder if you were around back then, would you have been thrown into an asylum for a temper tantrum, because you voiced an opionion, or because you were married to someone who wanted a divorce and figured it was cheaper to admit you there instead.

El verdadero miedo del Eloise Asylum es que muchas de las cosas que te asustan son cosas que realmente ocurrieron en el edificio, documentadas, en los libros, junto con registros de muerte reales de personas reales en el área. Truth is stranger than fiction, and it can be scarier, too.  When you feel the chill of the air there, is it a drop in temperature, or an actual spirit saying hi, as they are happy to finally see a visitor there?  When you don't know for sure, that's the real scare in going to an actual haunted location like Eloise Asylum.

That being said, there is a time and a place for over the top theatrics, and Azra stepped up for that.  As opposed to an actual storyline in a real location, Azra popped up in the midst of Madison Heights.  We parked at the church next door, which did not require an additional parking fee like Eloise's extra $5.

As mentioned, the entrance was great with the dancers, DJ, lasers, blacklights, props and whatnot.  They were giving out freebies, which is always cool.  We got a foam glow bar and a laynard there.

Inside Azra, they started out traditional, then went into an entire section where you put on 3D glasses and have the blacklight effects.  This is a teaser for their blackout event next weekend, where they open the haunted attraction, turn out all the lights and only give one person a black light flashlight to find their way through.  If I am still in town, that sounds like a pretty cool thing to check out actually.

Azra brought a bigger variety of scares, from clowns and dolls to a room inspired by American Horror Story, which was a cool surprise.  Talking after, neither haunted house had vampires or werewolves, which is what a lot of haunted attractions used to have.  This was more new age with the lasers, blacklights and 3D effects, but it also had some traditional classics, like a spider room that had the spooky feeling spiderwebs dangling from the ceiling to brush against your face as you walked.

While Eloise Asylum had one of my favorite effects, the spinning tunnel that makes you feel as if you're going to fall over when you're standing up, Azra had a few other effects.  Azra had the creepy bridge that made you feel as if you will fall, as well as rooms that got smaller and ramps to trick your footing.  Again, the effects were different flavors, so not the same to be able to say one is better than the other.

Overall, I would go back to both of them again.  Eloise Asylum has some ghost hunt options that I would be up for exploring, given the history of the location.  However, Azra has rage rooms where you can smash stuff, as well as escape rooms with different themes that look way cool to check out, too.

Again, both offer different things, so while some people rated Azra as number one in Michigan, I can see why.  However, I think the history of the Eloise Asylum kicks the scare factor up a notch as well.  Both are worthy of checking out, even if you have to wait until next year, and both offer some options to explore this year, such as the rage rooms at Azra and the guided ghost hunts at Eloise.

Hurricane Ian Diary 5: Huracán Ian Diario 5

 After being sick for two weeks, it was like emerging from a cocoon, as I had been on self-quarantine, not wanting to get anyone sick.  At first, leaving the house was like a new adventure, as the military posts were packing up, no longer offering the free food, though many still had water and ice, which was nice.  It's not like the whole thing cleaned itself up in that time, but progress was being made in the form of these huge, oversized double trash containers on wheels with a huge crane attached to grab massive fallen trees.

Sometimes, it takes some destruction and going to a new location for transformation to begin.  When a neighbor asked if I would drive his car up to Michigan, I was not opposed to leaving for a bit while things got back in order, especially after having to visit my doctor on the front porch of his destroyed office, getting tested by the pond along the back of his destroyed building, and realizing that we would not even send in prescriptions, as most of the pharmacies I used were destroyed or simply not open yet.  First, I had to go get the car up in St. Petersburg, and I couldn't leave for that far, until I could actually get gas.

Once more than one gas station had opened up, driving up to St. Petersburg, I was apprehensive, not knowing what further destruction I would see.  In the aftermath of a natural disaster, you simply expect the entire rest of the world to look as destroyed as your own neighborhood, but once I actually left, and drove north on the highway, the signs of destruction simply grew less and less, until like nothing happened.  Getting out of the car in St. Petersburg, meeting my friend, I couldn't help but comment how their trees still had leaves, and there were still visible flowers, not like in Port Charlotte, where it was definitely looking more like Halloween with the barren trees and not much green but the grass.

It's like I had blinders on, and I was only used to seeing the post-hurricane destruction.  Getting back to the real world, where people had already moved on from the hurricane drama, was shocking to me.  It's like everyone else had already moved on, turned it into old news, not realizing how things still looked.

Once the realization set in that since St. Petersburg looked fine, the rest of the country should be okay as well, that gave me the confidence to drive to Michigan.  Packing up the cats, grabbing the essentials, that drive seemed longer than normal, perhaps since I was still fighting feeling better, something my former fiance yelled at me about.  I say former, because when he said I was too concerned about my health and my house getting destroyed, for me, that was enough to call off the engagement.

Yes, I thought my house was fine, as the roof was still on, until the insurance adjuster brought the water camera over and explained that I had water standing in my walls and ceiling.  They had talked about destroying and rebuilding nearly half the home, to the point that looking at new houses came up.  Still unsure of what's going on with it, I though that and my health was reason to be concerned, and being with someone who is not concerned about me going through a Cat. 5 hurricane is enough to call it quits.

Seeing how my contract with MLB ended, I guess that makes me a free agent in all respects.  No, I still cannot say what team I was working with, but I can say that a lot of the stadiums we had been playing at in Southwest Florida are not quite the same as they were back in August, which breaks my heart.  I do not think anyone knows how next spring training will be yet, as the northern stadiums are probably fine, compared to the southern Florida stadiums that look like giants ripped through the roofs and tore up seating, tossing aluminum around in massive piles that would make most scrappers grab their trailers.

Regardless of who I was engaged to, I am not one to sit around and cry in my beer, especially since I don't really drink beer.  Instead, I high-tailed it to Michigan to see the white-tailed deer high-tail it at me.  Best way to cure a broken heart is not by smashing your finger while destroying a wall, though I thought home remodeling would have been a healthy way to vent until that happened; really, the best way is to grab some friends and head up to the haunted Eloise Asylum put on by Alice Cooper.

One thing I will say is that it was true to the era, featuring things like lobotomies, deprivation chambers, electroshock therapy and all those wonderful tools that not all that long ago were considered totally acceptable treatment.  Who cares about the insane when they can perform brain surgeries on them?  Truth is stranger than fiction, and if you want a dose of haunted truth, then Eloise Asylum will make you forget about how bad you thought you had it compared to the many who checked in and never left.

I will say this was almost as much fun as standing in a flock of geese on the move at Calder's Dairy.  Almost as fun, because Calder's always has awesome ice cream.  It wasn't quite so fun to have to get towed from a smart car's battering smoking there, but the ice cream is always awesome, just FYI.

Hurricane Ian Diary 4: Diario del huracán Ian 4

 Don’t trust anything in the fridge or freezer to still be good. Day four of being sick as a dog. Still struggling to hold down water.

Best hurricane game to play when you cannot even hold water down is sort through the rancid food in the fridge and freezer. Everything gets tossed, and it gives you time to uncover things you forgot you had, like damn I wish I knew that smoothie was in there. Toss the expensive organic stuff.

El mejor juego de huracanes para jugar cuando ni siquiera puedes contener el agua es clasificar la comida ranciosa en la nevera y el congelador. That stank stench of sickness sweating out my pores is almost as nasty as the rotten food. Give it a few days in the sun, and the food will be more pungent. Trash pickup is in a few days still, but I couldn’t stand the colors from the fridge staining my floors.

Game today was float in overly shocked pool n try to lazily chase a few leaves. That pool is green, and the filter is shot. I am acting as the filter right now, and not a very good one.

It dawned on me that my FCL baseball coverage was probably some of the last pictures of the stadiums in tact. Though I have not driven to all the stadiums, Charlotte Sports Park looks like an angry giant tore through it, ripping up stadium seats and tearing off roofing. Still have until Thanksgiving before I am allowed to say which team I was working with this year.

The highlight of the day was having a filmmaker reach out to me, asking if I might be up for them doing a documentary on my books. Not sure if it will turn into anything or not, but always nice to know that people notice. Guess we shall see what the future holds.

Hurricane Ian Diary 3: Huracán Ian Diario 3

How good are you at driving by memory? There’s no stop signs, let alone visible street names, so hope you remember which road is which from the blown out buildings that used to be markers that you might recognize. Not like the cell phones are working for the GPS to guide you either.

¿Qué tan bueno eres conduciendo de memoria? Hurray for the National Guard’s ration of ice, water and food. Thank you very much. We appreciate it, as stores are not all open yet, and if they are, it’s slim pickings peppered with price gouging.

They are set up at the Charlotte Sports Complex where the Tampa Bay Rays play and had players camped out. All the teams sent their players home, with some foreign players returning to third world countries in not much better shape than here, as the Caribbean got walloped with the same storm and others like Fiona. Does Cuba even have power yet, because didn’t they say that whole country lost power after one of the storms?

Instead of going to the stadium to cover a game, it’s pull in line the long scenic way behind the stadium to the Oshkosh trucks and military personnel. They are smiling, joking, friendly, pointing you where to pull up. Pop the back, they put it in, and send you on your way.

The space food has a thing that heats up. Be careful, as it steams and water spurts. Make sure you put it on stuff that can get wet, not a pile of papers or pretty fabric.

Stores, please, do not let us think that we can order online, as we will risk life and limb in hopes of getting whatever we ordered, only to show up to a tree smashing the building or some sort of obviously not open obstacle. Now, if you are mom and pop’s small time only location that got ruined, we will give you a pass. However, if you are a chain with more than one location that was NOT affected by the hurricane, then have someone in one of those areas with internet update your site to say that location is closed instead of giving us false hopes and making us waste what precious gas we have left for these false promises.

In the meantime, I am caring for people’s pets, updating the out-of-towners, and getting me workout by cleaning. If nothing else, it’s an excuse to clean up the yard. If you had been thinking of changing up the landscaping, it’s pretty much a blank slate after you clear all the gravy if hogwash that consists of everything from Spanish moss, broken twigs, and aluminum from houses, to broken headphones, shingles from roofs, bags of chips that’s a ground score, twisted chairs, and whatever the heck that was.

Another piece of fencing to heft, another ground score of an avocado still attached to a broken tree limb, and another few hundred bites from the plentiful critters that keep gnawing on me. Picking up all the Spanish moss piles will make you like the Itchy and Scratchy Show. How many times can I get poked from different types of cacti unexpectedly?

How long until my eyes adjust to this dim candle? How long will the candle burn before I have to hunt for another? How long until all that ice is melted?

Take a sip of water and get back at it to get that bikini body you’ve been lusting over.

Make new frustrated friends who are also wishing the line would move a heck of a lot faster, so you already have things in common.

Dad keeps asking what's the hold up with getting gas?  There's a few places that have their roof torn off, but the pumps look good, so why are we not having people there to get those places up and running?  My father was more than thrilled to stand in line for a gas station, only to be turned away, as they said emergency response vehicles only are allowed to get gas, not for civilians, sorry, try no other option in gas, so just stay at home hunkered in.

He keeps saying after the last few disasters, the gas pumps are all supposed to have generators, and he doesn't understand why more gas is not available.  Can't they send in fuel trucks and fill people straight from the trucks?  Mobile filling stations are needed, and the gas response needs to be addressed for future endeavors.

Sigue diciendo que después de los últimos desastres, se supone que todas las bombas de gasolina tienen generadores, y no entiende por qué no hay más gasolina disponible. ¿No pueden enviar camiones de combustible y llenar a la gente directamente de los camiones? Well, at least you have the option of spending the last of your gas fumes waiting in line for some food and water rations.  There seems to be better meal selections with the military posts than at some of the stores, so thank you for that much.  It's strange to see Oshkosh trucks lined up with Estes semitrucks at the Charlotte Sports Park.

I'm happy to see them set up, thankful to get some cases of water and various food.  Yesterday, they had ham and turkey sandwiches, and today, they had pulled pork with green beans and even gave away big tarps to cover up the holes in roofs.  This came in handy, as we had the tree removed from the roof and found five holes up there today.

Flirt with the military. Both guys and gals look hot in uniforms broiling in the Florida sun, so give them an ego stroke. Not like they’re going to leave their post that second to play hookup, but fun comments help pass the time and make both of you smile at least.

It's disappointing to think where I was a month and a half ago, posted behind home plate taking pictures at a FCL Tampa Bay Rays game, is now in smithereens.  Above the stands, the aluminum is peeled back as if from a giant can opener, pieces strew throughout the field, some in massive piles, cleared up enough to get the cars through.  However, I think it's awesome that even in the ruins, the community can gather for food and water; be thankful.

Es decepcionante pensar que donde estaba hace un mes y medio, detrás del plato tomando fotografías en un juego de los FCL Tampa Bay Rays, ahora está hecho añicos. Encima de las gradas, el aluminio se despega como si fuera un abrelatas gigante, las piezas se esparcen por todo el campo, algunas en montones masivos, despejadas lo suficiente como para que los autos pasen.
