With so many haunted locations to choose from on the two-mile by four-mile island of Key West, we opted to stay at the Amsterdam Curry Mansion and the La Concha Hotel, both haunted destinations with other haunted places nearby, such as the Hard Rock Cafe and the Artist House. The Curry Mansion and La Concha won over other haunted properties we could have stayed at simply due to their prime locations near the heart of the Duval Crawl. There’s no shortage of ghosts and time warps on the tiny island.

The Curry Mansion has always been one of my favorite houses on the island with its ornate gingerbread detailing and whimsical decorations with various holidays. Rumor has it that a figure is often seen on a staircase in the mansion, and when we first walked in, I had the feeling of someone watching us from the main staircase. However, when we wandered with the EMF readers, the main staircase didn’t spike as much as the back staircase.

The familiars on the property are willing to beg for food to the point they have signs asking not to feed the cats, or else they’ll be wanting cell phones next. Rusty, the big, fat, orange cat is the biggest offender, but he’s on a special diet. Don’t fall for him flopping at your feet and batting his eyelashes as you eat.

Located a block from Duval, with parking on the property, this is a prime location if you want to stumble to the Duval bars and not have to worry about driving or paying the outrageous parking fees. Sip coffee on the balcony as the sunrises, and feel the peacefulness of swaying palm trees. When you’re ready for a stronger drink, simply slosh down the Duval Crawl.

Just a little ways down Duval is the other haunted hotel, La Concha. This used to be the best place to see the sunset in town, being one of the tallest buildings, but they are under construction at the moment. They are putting a rooftop gym as well as an executive suite where the sunset will be seen by guests, as opposed to the public on their once famous rooftop bar.

Of course, it is the rooftop that is known to make this hotel haunted. Being one of the tallest buildings, if not the tallest at the time, a number of people jumped, or who knows if they were pushed? Either way, they are dead, but some of them continue to take up residence at the hotel.

One of the small elevators held a little vibe in it that made us double take to make sure we were alone. There were areas of the hallways where we felt a cool breeze and saw a small spike, such as spirits passing by or through us. There’s so much construction going on, who knows what they might disturb during renovations, as some say changes can bring about a spike of supernatural activity.

Only way to know for sure is to go stay and see for yourself. Will you opt for the wooden gingerbread details of the Curry Mansion, or are you more into the swanky feel of the Wine-O bar at La Concha? Or are you brave enough to stay in the attic at the Artist House where Robert the Doll once lived?
