How can I summarize my years in music? For so long, I was going to concerts almost every night of the week. I worked my way up from an intern to a newspaper writer to a magazine editor, and an author, covering music and all kinds of other events along the way.

However, I can tell you the ins and outs of dealing with corporate roadblocks and the entertainment industry from an insider's viewpoint, which is priceless for those just starting out in entertainment. I was selected to host a class for Johns Hopkins’ Odyssey Program, which is open to anyone who cares to sign up for classes taught by Johns Hopkins University Alumni, like myself, and other special guests. There’s all kinds of cool classes to choose from starting in the fall, and my class will be Mastering Music Videos. Who wants to pick my brain about the entertainment industry? Anyone want to hear my tales of touring on Ozzfest and working with professional athletes? Anyone want to make a music video, and they might need some clues on how to get started?

At this point, I have had decades in the music industry, both in front and behind the camera. My first experiences photographing bands were as a pre-teen, with Steppenwolf and Cheap Trick being a couple of my earliest experiences, photographing as they played Party in the Park, or Rally by the River, which was basically free concerts held on the river in downtown Toledo, Ohio. I didn’t know then that I would get into journalism and go on to tour with Ozzfest in 2002 - let alone go to John’s Hopkins for my Master’s after touring the country with rock stars and win awards for music videos.

I all too vividly remember going back to cover Ozzfest when I was a student at Johns Hopkins University, and Big Val, who was the head of security for Ozzfest and Pantera, had me hop on the golf cart to go to front row and give me a heartfelt talk. He very simply stated that it’s rare that people actually follow through with what they say they are going to do, and he admitted that when he found out I was going for my masters, he expected it to be another person just talking about it. I was the one who actually followed through, and in his words, “you didn’t just get accepted to any graduate school, you got accepted to one of the best universities in the world.”

He explained that a lot of professional musicians get discovered when they are young, and many wind up dropping out of not only college, but many times high school, to go tour the country and make money as a musician. Having any kind of a degree in the music industry can be rare, and he explained that he was proud of me on behalf of all the entertainers who didn’t get the chance to make it to college , let alone graduate school. Though it was not a very long conversation, it literally brings me to tears to think about it now that he has passed, as it still means so much to me.

People do not always take the time to give acknowledgments. Even when you do a good job, compliments can still be rare, few and far between. When somebody pulls you aside, takes the time to acknowledge hard work that you have been doing, it always makes you feel good to be recognized.

That’s why when I got the email from Johns Hopkins University that they would be willing to let me teach a class, I was excited. Honestly, I submitted a lot of ideas, as they did not have a limit on the number of suggestions that you could put forth. For whatever reason, they liked the idea of the music video class the best.

Maybe it’s because I have been winning awards for making music videos. Maybe they remember that my Johns Hopkins’ thesis involved musicians and things from the entertainment industry. Maybe it’s because I have been doing live event filming for decades now, from music to sports.

I don’t even toot my own horn enough or share my own experiences enough. Even though I have tons of books, more than 100 published at this point, I still have not shared every story of my life, as some simply cannot be written for various reasons. For example, there are certain things that happen backstage that I am not allowed to discuss, as there are confidentiality agreements in place.

Having worked in a number of different industries over the years, it’s not just the entertainment industry that I am known for, and it’s not just working with professional athletes either. When I was attending Johns Hopkins University, I was an intern on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, summarizing the Presidential budget as it pertained to health care, explaining it in basic language for people across the nation to understand. This and other experience led to me becoming a medical editor, but I also sell real estate, design jewelry, and blow stuff up as a pyrotechnic for Garden State Fireworks, amongst other various things.

When I was younger, I used to book concerts, manage bands, promote entertainers, and do all kinds of things behind the scene of the entertainment industry. Now, I have gotten more into making films. I started as an extra and worked my way up to a director, learning everything from lighting, sound, casting, and wardrobe, to set design and more along the way, working for companies like IMAX, Universal and Disney over the years.

The horror movie is when the music videos started up again, and that was purely out of necessity and not having a budget to pay anyone else to help with background music. The horror movies tie into a series of books that were written a decade ago. I tap danced on the land mines with those.

When I say started up again, my first actual directing, producing, starring in, and writing of a music video was with a band in New Orleans. That was more like a three in the morning call of gather wardrobe, cameras, props, and make something happen with some talented special effects and computer gurus as the sun rises. It’s like gonzo gorilla filming on the fly, and I specialize in impromptu out of sheer necessity.

One of my first NOLA experiences was stumbling onto the set of Lil Wayne’s “Bring It Back” video. It still makes me laugh that when I was working with professional athletes, I was trying to explain Ozzfest to foreign players, and when I tried to show them a clip, they thought it was a real satanic ritual, with one screaming something about a blood oath to satan as he fled the room in sheer panic. They were way more impressed by a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in a Lil Wayne video than anything to do with Ozzfest or metal music.

How I went from working with rock stars to working with professional athletes is a totally different topic. How I worked my way from pyrotechnics at a sports stadium to teaching and filming athletes is a long story that I cannot fully share either. Let’s just say, it’s interesting experiences and quite fun.

Whether it’s manning the team cameras at a professional sporting event, or filming a concert, live event videography is an art. It requires your full attention, especially when there’s six camera angels to choose from in the Pressbox. I can honestly say that I have decades of experiences that other people would only dream about, and teaching a class at Johns Hopkins University through their Odyssey program is my way of being able to share a glimpse of my knowledge with whoever cares to know about it.

My training has been untraditional at best. My methods may be untraditional in the spur of the moment, but I also have the traditional schooling from Johns Hopkins. I’m that weird mix that welcomes teaching those who may be interested, as I know both the tried-and-true, as well as the experimental impromptu techniques.
