Hurricane Ian Diary 3: Huracán Ian Diario 3

How good are you at driving by memory? There’s no stop signs, let alone visible street names, so hope you remember which road is which from the blown out buildings that used to be markers that you might recognize. Not like the cell phones are working for the GPS to guide you either.

¿Qué tan bueno eres conduciendo de memoria? No hay señales de alto, y mucho menos nombres de calles visibles, así que espero que recuerdes qué camino es cuál de los edificios volados que solían ser marcadores que podrías reconocer. Tampoco es que los teléfonos celulares funcionen para que el GPS te guíe.

Hurray for the National Guard’s ration of ice, water and food. Thank you very much. We appreciate it, as stores are not all open yet, and if they are, it’s slim pickings peppered with price gouging.

Viva la ración de hielo, agua y comida de la Guardia Nacional. Muchísimas gracias. Lo apreciamos, ya que las tiendas aún no están abiertas, y si lo están, son pocas ganancias salpicadas de aumento de precios.

They are set up at the Charlotte Sports Complex where the Tampa Bay Rays play and had players camped out. All the teams sent their players home, with some foreign players returning to third world countries in not much better shape than here, as the Caribbean got walloped with the same storm and others like Fiona. Does Cuba even have power yet, because didn’t they say that whole country lost power after one of the storms?

Están instalados en el Charlotte Sports Complex donde juegan los Tampa Bay Rays y tenían jugadores acampados. Todos los equipos enviaron a sus jugadores a casa, con algunos jugadores extranjeros que regresaron a países del tercer mundo en no mucho mejor estado que aquí, ya que el Caribe fue azotado por la misma tormenta y otros como Fiona. ¿Cuba ya tiene electricidad, porque no dijeron que todo el país se quedó sin luz después de una de las tormentas?

Instead of going to the stadium to cover a game, it’s pull in line the long scenic way behind the stadium to the Oshkosh trucks and military personnel. They are smiling, joking, friendly, pointing you where to pull up. Pop the back, they put it in, and send you on your way.

En lugar de ir al estadio para cubrir un juego, es hacer fila por el largo camino panorámico detrás del estadio hasta los camiones y el personal militar de Oshkosh. Sonríen, bromean, son amigables y te indican dónde detenerte. Abre la parte de atrás, la colocan y te envían en tu camino.

The space food has a thing that heats up. Be careful, as it steams and water spurts. Make sure you put it on stuff that can get wet, not a pile of papers or pretty fabric.

La comida espacial tiene algo que se calienta. Ojo, que sale vapor y sale agua a borbotones. Asegúrate de ponerlo sobre cosas que puedan mojarse, no sobre una pila de papeles o telas bonitas.

Stores, please, do not let us think that we can order online, as we will risk life and limb in hopes of getting whatever we ordered, only to show up to a tree smashing the building or some sort of obviously not open obstacle. Now, if you are mom and pop’s small time only location that got ruined, we will give you a pass. However, if you are a chain with more than one location that was NOT affected by the hurricane, then have someone in one of those areas with internet update your site to say that location is closed instead of giving us false hopes and making us waste what precious gas we have left for these false promises.

Tiendas, por favor, no nos dejen pensar que podemos ordenar en línea, ya que arriesgaremos la vida con la esperanza de obtener lo que pedimos, solo para aparecer en un árbol que derriba el edificio o algún tipo de obstáculo que obviamente no está abierto. Thank you to all the people who keep offering me places to go. Only problem is there’s no gas to get there. Once the lines die down, I will gladly go on an adventure.

In the meantime, I am caring for people’s pets, updating the out-of-towners, and getting me workout by cleaning. If nothing else, it’s an excuse to clean up the yard. If you had been thinking of changing up the landscaping, it’s pretty much a blank slate after you clear all the gravy if hogwash that consists of everything from Spanish moss, broken twigs, and aluminum from houses, to broken headphones, shingles from roofs, bags of chips that’s a ground score, twisted chairs, and whatever the heck that was.

Mientras tanto, cuido a las mascotas de las personas, actualizo a los forasteros y hago ejercicio limpiando. Si nada más, es una excusa para limpiar el jardín. Si había estado pensando en cambiar el paisaje, es prácticamente una pizarra en blanco después de limpiar toda la salsa si es una tontería que consiste en todo, desde musgo español, ramitas rotas y aluminio de las casas, hasta auriculares rotos, tejas de techos, bolsas de fichas que es una puntuación de tierra, sillas torcidas, y lo que sea que sea.

Another piece of fencing to heft, another ground score of an avocado still attached to a broken tree limb, and another few hundred bites from the plentiful critters that keep gnawing on me. Picking up all the Spanish moss piles will make you like the Itchy and Scratchy Show. How many times can I get poked from different types of cacti unexpectedly?

Otro trozo de cerca para levantar, otra veintena de aguacate molido todavía adherido a una rama rota de un árbol, y otros cientos de mordiscos de las abundantes criaturas que siguen mordiéndome. Recoger todos los montones de musgo español hará que te guste el Show de Itchy and Scratchy. ¿Cuántas veces me pueden pinchar inesperadamente diferentes tipos de cactus?

How long until my eyes adjust to this dim candle? How long will the candle burn before I have to hunt for another? How long until all that ice is melted?

How did I get that massive welt on my arm? It itches. What kind of bite swells up that much, and is that biting beauty still nearby?

What’s that between my bosom? Pick out a chunk of something I cannot see. It’s probably something from a tree, like the bark and a leaf, unless it’s that bug that bit me.

More bites on my ankle. Is the candle attracting the bugs to bite me? Frustrating not being able to see who is coming after my blood, sucking on me like vampires.

If you’re sucking my blood, you should at least give me some special powers. I don’t need eternal life of listening to this loud rumble of the neighbor’s generator. They’re not even home, just having it run loud by my window as a reminder that mine is not working.

It’s more just a tripping hazard at this point. Something I can bang my shin against in the dark and curse at, almost as good as if it actually worked. Is it better than not having one?

The neighbors across the street got power on finally. Doesn’t that figure? Murphy’s Law that it’s not my house, just close enough to look at, like it’s sticking its tongue out at me.

What do I need power for? I got charged up earlier. Not like I watch much television in the first place, the fridge has already been tossed, and I can deal with room temperature water to drink for a bit longer.

Besides, there’s fun hurricane games to play like 52-stick pickup, as opposed to 52-card pickup. Yard work aerobics involves bending, reaching, tugging, pushing, taking, cutting, pulling and hefting for as long as you can stand it. Take a sip of water and get back at it to get that bikini body you’ve been lusting over.

Además, hay divertidos juegos de huracanes para jugar, como recoger 52 palos, en lugar de recoger 52 cartas. Watch the ever changing colors of ooze still leaking from the fridge. Constantly swab the deck to keep that putridness from being a permanent fixture on the flooring. Count the downed wires is always a fun game to play, just don’t get too close, or you might get a new hairstyle that stands on end and be smoking like the grill.

Count the blue tarps is another amusing game. New ones go up on roofs each day. From where I am sitting, I can see people struggling to put one on right now, so there’s one more to add to that continuously growing total.

Oh, and let’s not forget the if I turn my air conditioning off in the car, will the gas lady me one more day? For your socializing, you can spend an entire day waiting in line for gas. Make new frustrated friends who are also wishing the line would move a heck of a lot faster, so you already have things in common.

Ah, y no olvidemos que si apago el aire acondicionado en el auto, ¿la gasolina me dejará un día más? Para su socialización, puede pasar un día entero esperando en línea para gasolina. Dad keeps asking what's the hold up with getting gas?  There's a few places that have their roof torn off, but the pumps look good, so why are we not having people there to get those places up and running?  My father was more than thrilled to stand in line for a gas station, only to be turned away, as they said emergency response vehicles only are allowed to get gas, not for civilians, sorry, try no other option in gas, so just stay at home hunkered in.

Papá sigue preguntando ¿cuál es el problema con conseguir gasolina? Hay algunos lugares a los que se les ha arrancado el techo, pero las bombas se ven bien, entonces, ¿por qué no tenemos gente allí para poner en marcha esos lugares? He keeps saying after the last few disasters, the gas pumps are all supposed to have generators, and he doesn't understand why more gas is not available.  Can't they send in fuel trucks and fill people straight from the trucks?  Mobile filling stations are needed, and the gas response needs to be addressed for future endeavors.

Sigue diciendo que después de los últimos desastres, se supone que todas las bombas de gasolina tienen generadores, y no entiende por qué no hay más gasolina disponible. ¿No pueden enviar camiones de combustible y llenar a la gente directamente de los camiones? Se necesitan estaciones de servicio móviles y la respuesta del gas debe abordarse para futuros esfuerzos.

Well, at least you have the option of spending the last of your gas fumes waiting in line for some food and water rations.  There seems to be better meal selections with the military posts than at some of the stores, so thank you for that much.  It's strange to see Oshkosh trucks lined up with Estes semitrucks at the Charlotte Sports Park.

I'm happy to see them set up, thankful to get some cases of water and various food.  Yesterday, they had ham and turkey sandwiches, and today, they had pulled pork with green beans and even gave away big tarps to cover up the holes in roofs.  This came in handy, as we had the tree removed from the roof and found five holes up there today.

Estoy feliz de verlos instalados, agradecido de recibir algunas cajas de agua y varios alimentos. Ayer comieron sándwiches de jamón y pavo, y hoy habían tirado cerdo con judías verdes y hasta regalaron lonas grandes para tapar los agujeros en los techos. Esto fue útil, ya que retiramos el árbol del techo y hoy encontramos cinco agujeros allí.

Flirt with the military. Both guys and gals look hot in uniforms broiling in the Florida sun, so give them an ego stroke. Not like they’re going to leave their post that second to play hookup, but fun comments help pass the time and make both of you smile at least.

It's disappointing to think where I was a month and a half ago, posted behind home plate taking pictures at a FCL Tampa Bay Rays game, is now in smithereens.  Above the stands, the aluminum is peeled back as if from a giant can opener, pieces strew throughout the field, some in massive piles, cleared up enough to get the cars through.  However, I think it's awesome that even in the ruins, the community can gather for food and water; be thankful.

Es decepcionante pensar que donde estaba hace un mes y medio, detrás del plato tomando fotografías en un juego de los FCL Tampa Bay Rays, ahora está hecho añicos. Encima de las gradas, el aluminio se despega como si fuera un abrelatas gigante, las piezas se esparcen por todo el campo, algunas en montones masivos, despejadas lo suficiente como para que los autos pasen. Sin embargo, creo que es asombroso que incluso en las ruinas, la comunidad pueda reunirse para obtener comida y agua; estar agradecido.
