For metal shows, it's worth making the drive to Tampa. It's the home of the hate for the Sunshine State. I dare say that some of the best metal shows in the state have been in Tampa for quite a while now, save when Fort Myers is allowed to host some sold out festivals, but those days might be behind us for a while.

The new home of the Orpheum on Nebraska has more of the old school Skipper's vibe with an outdoor option that is great, especially when combined with the ice cold inside air conditioning where you can escape to when it gets too sweaty outside. There's something about the Spanish moss in the trees that adds that spooky type of ambiance that kicks metal shows up a notch. The crowd also helps with that.

The crowd was itching to mosh before the first band even took the stage, as you could just see that look in their eyes, like they've been building up some tensions and frustrations that they were ready to unload. Perhaps seeing a guy pull out a mouth guard was the first telling sign that this mosh pit might explode a little more than the average one, but what do I know? Let the bands rile them up and see.

No telling what could happen.

Like a fog rolling in unexpectedly, Creeping Death took the stage, shaking up the crowd, inviting them to get mulling about, rolling into each other, trying to get each other riled up. One body gets shoved into another, enough to make that push back, and that little bit is all it takes. Combine that natural aggression with some overly aggressive thrash metal, and things get shaken up like a tossed salad.

Those Texas boys are known to get a crowd rowdy. You can tell that Creeping Death is getting ready to headline their own tour, because they commanded the crowd to rally into action. Straight out the gate, heads are thumping, bodies are bumping and you can start to see the mosh pit swirling around.

Like passing the torch while running without dropping it, the crowd's energy only burned brighter as Sacred Reich took the stage. This old school thrash band may have taken a while away from recording, but they certainly reminded the crowd who laid the foundation for the thrash scene. More eyes open wide, bodies come alive, and the rage of the mosh continues to build like a boiling pot.

Frankly, I was a little sad to not see Jason on stage, as he's honestly one of my favorites. The founding member had toured on Ozzfest with me in 2002, working behind the scenes, but was just a really cool guy. I remember him being there the first time I met Phil Anselmo of Pantera and other key moments of tour, but while I was sad to not see Jason on stage, it was still awesome to hear his music played.

This was the signal that they were ready to hit that point of no return, where the rage cannot be contained. Various body parts were already being seen in strange positions in the crowd when Municipal Waste took the stage.

You could tell this band was ready to make an impact. It's like taking a direct punch in the face. You will feel it, and it's probably going to leave a mark on you that you will not likely forget anytime soon.

They were ready to have the crowd simply tear themselves apart to be left as Municipal Waste. Maybe that's where the name came from? You might have thought there'd be only limp carcasses left when Carcass took the stage, but there must've been some zombie voodoo in the air, as they kept moving.

Carcass has a legacy in thrash metal that crosses generations. This is noted even by their music that has spanned across decades, touching people of different ages. Looking out at the audience, it was not all the young whippersnappers, not all blue hairs, but a sea of all ages ready to rock out as long as the music kept playing, unable to take a break from the eruptions of energy culminating in the mosh.
Carcass tiene un legado en el thrash metal que cruza generaciones. Esto se nota incluso por su música que se ha extendido a lo largo de décadas, tocando a personas de diferentes edades.
