As Spring Training grinds to a halt, baseball players are sent to their assigned destinations on the various teams, preparing for the start of baseball season. This includes free baseball season here in Florida, as the Florida Complex League will host a number of free games at the various facilities. These free games are often the first chance to see the new college recruits, as well as the first time that foreign players get to experience playing in America, making it the best way to familiarize yourself with the skill set of the next up and coming baseball stars of you’re into betting.

Some games are labeled as “bullpen games,” where they try to give various pitchers a chance on the field. Others are “rehab games,” where various previously injured players are given a chance to shine up their skills again. Now, I am not allowed to say which are which, but when you get to know the individual players, their injury history, playing history and whatnot, this is how you learn which players are more likely to pull out a win when on field.

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert, as there were a lot of big names I was not super familiar with, honestly. That’s when I pipe up. The old timers turn their heads, look at me puzzled, check what I said and are amazed. They scratch their heads at how I know this, ask me the proper name pronunciation, and sit back stumped.

Anyone who has read my coverage of the past couple seasons on the Florida Complex League can understand how I might be familiar with the players, watching them game after game through my camera. However, most people don’t bother with the lower leagues and don’t understand how I have action shots already of these new stars they are seeing for the first time during their debut at Spring Training. They constantly ask where I got that picture, I explain that I took it, and they’re baffled.

Of course, I am not at liberty to discuss how I got involved in major and minor league baseball, or the other things I might do behind the scenes with any specific team. Let’s just say, it has made me privileged to certain information, such as learning the details of some injuries in the past. Thus, when I spoke up about one player having suffered a blood clot in his jugular, these baseball guru dudes who didn’t know that factoid about a player debuting in Spring Training look at me like I’m some sort of psychic medium or something, which only makes me laugh when they fact check and find my information to be entirely correct.

It’s one of those things where I didn’t even realize how much I had learned about these lower level players, until I was invited to be at Spring Training and was able to chime in. Just watching the guys’ heads turn towards me, knowing I was right, seeing the doubt in their eyes, then hearing that congratulations when they found me correct was satisfying. “How did she know that about that player?”

Ok, I may have gotten in trouble for cheering in the press box a few times. First time, I whistled a little too loud, causing echoing through the headsets that caused people to jump with cringes. Other times, cheers escaped my lips, also startling people, so I learned the hard way not to cheer while wearing headsets in the press box.

We did get to do other fun things in the press box, such as releasing beach balls, as in enough to set a record at CoolToday Park. There’s nothing quite like grabbing trash bags full of beach balls and dumping them on the eager crowd. It’s like being in a Mardi Gras parade where people hope you throw them something to treasure.

Again, I cannot say exactly what I did while wearing headsets in the press box, but I can tell you that being up there is like being part of a symphony of constantly moving parts, where you strive for everything to flow with certain specified timing. You have to be able to pivot when timing doesn’t work as planned, always having a backup plan for the unexpected that’s bound to happen. From unexpected visitors like players and special guests that can vary from musicians to government officials and more, you don’t always know what will happen each day, as surprises are bound to happen in the MLB.

There’s a flow for television production, and just when you think you’re familiar with what happens, in struts Bally to take things over, doing things in their own style. There’s radio announcers and so many others strolling around the press area, it’s hard to keep track of what everybody is doing at once.

As such, the best moments of Spring Training for me was not only seeing my boys take the field for Spring Training for the first time, but watching some of them earn their first championship rings. For someone who does not have kids, that’s the closest to a proud mom moment you can get. Knowing how much they struggled, how hard they tried, the injuries that were overcome and to see them advance is beyond words really.

Honestly, it’s just as heartbreaking to see ones get hurt, not heal right, and be sent home. For various reasons, not everyone makes it, and when you’re emotionally invested in the individual players, it hurts to see them leave. For me, I like having someone I know on the field, as having someone to cheer for makes you emotionally invested in a game, which gets you more into feeling those wins and losses.

I have covered sports for a couple decades at this point, and I don’t care what sport you’re talking, whether it’s baseball, hockey, basketball, track, gymnastics, cheerleading, swimming, diving, wrestling, football, or whatever, when you know the athlete involved, it’s more fun to watch as a spectator. You can still have fun at a hockey or baseball game not knowing anyone playing, but even having one person you know out there makes it so much better. You don’t have to personally know someone’s family to become familiar with them as a player, because just watching a few games, you will naturally find a favorite to follow.

Finding those favorites early in their careers makes watching them come up all the more fun. While the majority of the nation might be following the majors, I suggest checking out those minor leagues as well. Not only will you save money on tickets, but when your favorite finally does make it to the majors, you can get that proud parent feeling of satisfaction and be able to rattle off factoids to those who only eye the major players, knowingly surprising them, and setting yourself up for better betting.
