When you’re young and in the entertainment scene, and you don’t know who anybody is, people loved to mess with you. When I was at Ozzfest the very first night, I did not have my bearings of who was who, let alone who was around me. I just remember being in the parking lot after the show, and when people found out I had a digital camera, which was a fairly new thing back then, everyone wanted to see the pictures that I took.

Through the crowd, as I’m looking down at my camera, I hear someone ask, “hey, you got any pictures of that Pepper cat? I hear he’s pretty good.”

I flipped through the collection until I got to the part where Down was, then I flipped until I found Pepper Keenan. I was more focused on looking for the pictures than being concerned with who was around me. Therefore, I could hardly believe my eyes when I looked up.

You could tell that he loved infiltrating a crowd, nobody actually realizing who he was, even when he’s asking me to find a picture of himself.

Neither of us knew that night that I would be asked to join the tour the very next day. His smiling face that I saw that night, it would not be the last time to witness him pulling such shenanigans. He very often had that very same Cheshire cat-like grin when I saw him in random places, not only throughout the country on tour, but also quite often when I lived in New Orleans, on his home turf.

Being the author of more than 100 books now, this Cheshire grin had influenced me early on, as he has appeared as a Cheshire cat-like character in a number of my books throughout the years. He always has this big grin, and before you can really put two and three together that he’s standing in front of you, he disappears as if he was never there, making you wonder if you just hallucinated him. People will always assure you that he was just there, that he gave you a hug, and then he just vanished into the night.

This is cracked me up over the years, and the more I got to know him, the more I realize that not everybody knew him as a household name, and he loved taking advantage of this. I remember being invited to watch them record an acoustic version of “Stone the Crow” in Detroit, and afterwards, we went out to the bar, with me being the designated driver. I remember Rex, Pepper, and Norris being a little shocked that I was rocking 2 Live Crew, but I was more shocked at Pepper’s actions while out at the bar.

While Rex was more reserved, more into quietly drinking whiskey at the bar, Pepper is more into being the life of the party. Pepper goes out, and he takes advantage of the fact that people can recognize that he is famous, but they don’t know who the hell he is. He goes around telling everyone that he meets that he’s from a different Big hair 80s band, each of them buying into it, hook line and sinker, and to top it off, he would casually point over to Rex.

These are the types of shenanigans that I just can’t stop laughing about years later, with Rex, of course, being the original bass player from Pantera, casually blending into the scenery, nobody realizing who he was either.

And let me clarify, it’s not just Pepper who is like that in Corrosion of Conformity, as Woody is very much cut from the same cloth.

I remember making the mistake of telling Woody that I was not a huge country fan. That’s when he sat me down and made me listen to Dwight Yoakam. He insisted that anyone who is in the music scene should be able to appreciate every music genre, and he schooled me with some country songs that he knew I would appreciate, expanding my musical horizons.

In my own personal music history, my first major interview was right around my 21st birthday. I had been working at newspapers, but I didn’t quite realize that gave me the power to interview whoever I wanted. Once it was explained to me, I said that one of my favorite bands was coming over from Dublin, Ireland, a band called Therapy?.

Of course, just starting out, I was curious what bands they thought were cool to tour with, and they told me one of their favorite bands to tour with of all times was Clutch.

Shortly after, I made it a point to interview Clutch. I think that might have actually been my first time going to the Agora ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio, for that show. That’s a classic venue, at least in my opinion.

Let’s just say that trying to be a good girl at that show was trying at best, but the lead singer of the band that I had been managing at the time was more than willing to indulge in my place.

The next year, I’d be working on the Ozzfest tour as a Harley girl, following natural chemistry with the body painter, who was a huge Clutch fan, so after the tour, when we moved into our place in Key West together, it was Clutch almost on a nightly basis. We’d jam out, taking over the third floor (which did not exist on city blueprints, as it was built as a brothel), with me writing novels and Machete Eddie painting various creations. Unfortunately, the airbrush artist known for body painting passed from pancreatic cancer, with it recently being the anniversary of his death, as well as the death anniversary of my best friend Mack Attack who wound up creating the infamous Kick Me in the Head game while touring with me on Ozzfest.

On a happier note, today is the birthday of my dead ex's Ozzfest boss, Joe Carter of Rockstar Airbrush, celebrating 70 years, as he was the original one who started the trend of body painting in Key West at Fantasy Fest back in the '70's, and he was the original one featured on the Playboy Channel and multiple Ozzfest tours. We did a number of gigs together over the years, as I had worked as their sales model at various events, and at Mardi Gras the one year, I remember Joe having to confront an artist claiming to be him, set up just around the corner from his setup. Joe was not only there my first stint in Key West, but he became my landlord when I was working as a sports writer down there after earning my Master's in Writing at the Johns Hopkins University - and Eddie stayed with me a bit then, too, still blaring Clutch the entire time, along with others.

There’s so many songs that just became part of that time frame set list if you will. Like when you look back at those memories, it’s Clutch playing in the background. I don’t know how else to explain why they took such a big toll on my life, other than the fact that I always appreciated that Neil wrote with a storyline in his songs, and as a writer, I always appreciate a good story.

That’s why it’s so much cooler to see them as the slow burn of a band. It’s like their gathering only grows bigger in time. By the time that I saw them in Detroit, how many years later, they were selling out the entire theater.

Now, when it comes to Pinkus, this is a character that I have yet to actually meet in person. I have heard him hyped up so much, it’s like he already has a place in the story, even if he never realized it. His legend lived on in the artist house, a house that had been destroyed in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, which had been located right next to Independence Studios.

Now, just so Pinkus remembers the house where he had stayed before Hurricane Katrina a number of times, this would be the guy who, at the time, had extremely long red hair, and after the hurricane, he had to canoe over that 10 or 12 foot barbwire fence. He thought it was a mannequin, but it was the dead body of one of his neighbors floating in his yard when he tried to get in his house to retrieve the more than $30,000 that he had left there, but it didn’t work out as he hoped. That house was bulldozed before anything could ever be retrieved out of it.

To understand this artist house, as they called it, you would have to understand that it was more than just Pinkus who stopped by, as there was a number of famous artists who were known to flop there from time to time, from actors, to musicians, and people you would never expect. This house has definitely appeared in a number of my stories, as it literally had a prayer in blood in the bathroom. The story I heard was that one child pushed another child down the well, and then the parent pushed the other child down the well. Apparently, Satanists had targeted the house prior to the artists living there, trying to summon the spirit of the two dead children, and they apparently had succeeded, like both children did not realize they were dead.

It was on the corner of Poland and Kentucky. Independent Studios was one of those places that most people would not even know about; it’s that sneaker attack spot where people learn why Louisiana is the real LA. There’s so many movies filmed there that people don’t even realize, and when they're film there, they need equipment from places like Independent Studios.

While the movie stuff was great, with the lil leprechaun that host Pinkus being involved in all that filming fun and was the one who handed me a script and challenged me to write my first screenplay - to which, I wrote a trilogy within a few months in response. All I knew was I was the Taurus trapped with the Scorpios in this house, and the spirits seemed to have liked me. There’s only a few places I’ve experienced a time warp, and as crazy as it sounds, that place was one of them: why is it before a time warp, people will tell you that it’s about to happen?

The redhead was so used to the spirits traveling in and out of his body; I don’t know how to explain it. Right before we went out the door, he told me that they wanted to show me what it was like when they were alive. That’s when I experienced a time warp that went back to about the 1950s or so.

By the time that we got to the fence of the yard and went to open the gate, I watched those same girls in poodle skirts, transform before my eyes into modern day chicks, walking around the Ninth Ward the way I had known it right before Hurricane Katrina.

Call my crazy all you want, but these are just some of this crazy stories that I can’t explain from this location, and included in those stories are so many stories of Pinkus. He’s like this living legend that I’ve yet to actually meet in person, but I felt like I’ve known so long because of all the stories I’ve heard about him. I guess that’s why I’m willing to drive a few states away to the middle of the country to see these guys play for my birthday.

The reason I mentioned this guy is not only because of his associations with Pinkus, but also because he and his buddy went to school with Pepper Keenan, being just a few years older. They would jokingly tell me about Pepper being on his skateboard, hanging outside of music clubs, listening outside, as he was too young to get in back in the day. Can we all just take a minute and picture Pepper Keenan as a young skateboarder outside a club back in the day for a second?

Me personally, I like thinking of Galactic at the Lock’n festival in Virginia. That was just an epic festival altogether. And if you don’t know why I’m mentioning the band Galactic, it’s because the Galactic drummer is who’s playing for Corrosion of Conformity on their latest album since their original drummer, Reed, passed.

It’d be nice if tours like this made stops in South Florida, but until that happens, looks like we have to drive for our entertainment a lil more. Down south here is a much different scene than Detroit, where most bands usually will make a stop. Most bands don’t want to drive all the way down to South Florida, as you really only have the East Coast and West Coast to hit up for gigs, then you ultimately have to drive all the way back up to go anywhere else in the country.

Speaking of birthdays, it’s worth taking the drive just to wish happy birthday to Pepper as well in May. Seeing how his birthday is within a week of my birthday, it’s always a good chance to wish well for more upcoming birthdays.
