Orioles Take on the Braves: Orioles se enfrentan a los Bravos

With the heat of summer cranking up, the Florida Complex League continues to battle for the right to compete in the championship game, with each game counting either for or against that title shot.  In today's game, the Baltimore Orioles took on the Atlanta Braves at CoolToday Park.  With the Venice YMCA bringing their cheering section of little ones, many thought it was the Braves and the "Oreos."

The little ones might not have enough ballgame experience to have a favorite team, as many children could be heard switching cheering for the home team of the Braves, then shouting for their favorite cookie of the Oreos, and back again, having fun, chuckling and screaming.  This group was definitely the loudest cheering section, as many of the adults hid from the sun in the shaded sections of the park, while many eager children loved trying to get as close as possible to take in all of the action.  That's creating memories that these children will likely cherish for years to come, and that's the fun of baseball games, making memories with friends, chasing after foul balls and feeling the excitement of getting one.

Have you ever caught a ball at a baseball game?  Can you remember the first time you got a ball at a baseball game?  Not everyone gets that lucky to experience it, but those that do tend to remember it.

There's regular fans that go to a lot of the area games.  Adults like Bob, Merv, Shelby and Ms. Triana are often seen at a number of area baseball games, and they have shared some of their cherished memories.  Bob O'Leary has been attending games since he was a kid, collecting balls and bats when possible, amassing a collection of more than 20 broken bats and around a couple hundred balls over his lifetime.

It's easy to become a baseball fan when they offer free games for the FCL.  It's one of those activities that fits the budget, and when you're bored with little ones during summer vacation, it's a fun time.  Most of the Spring Training facilities in Florida offer these summer freebies, so check individual schedules.

Today's game was almost like an extended game of catch, as only one run was scored on the board.  Innings moved fast.  That's not to say there was not some drama still, as the bases got loaded, causing fans to bite their fingernails with anticipation, hoping and wanting to see a grand slam, but nope.

There were leaps in the air, slides into bases, and all the fun that baseball has to offer, but not many runs.  That did not stop the kids from cheering their hearts out, egging each other on to scream in synch with each other for one team or the other.  They loved being able to get loud and scream at the teams.

With some FCL teams not advertising too often, you might not have heard that the Rays changed their game on June 17th to a night game, and Braves hosting a couple night games on the 18th and 28th, giving those that work during the day a chance to catch their favorite teams after work at night.  Double check the schedules at the individual parks by calling, checking their websites, and signs out front.

Braves Battle Rays: Bravos Rayos de Batalla

For those up north missing out on all these free Florida baseball games held at the various Spring Training complexes around the state, we have been keeping up on the Florida Complex League for you.  Though most people refer to these guys as rookies, there are some familiar faces that have been around the FCL for years, which means it is not their first season, as people think of when they hear the rookie term.  There's various levels of baseball, and when you watch the individual leagues, you can watch the moves the various teams make over the years, being able to hold back talent and unleash it unexpectedly.

You cannot always tell what will happen over the course of a season.  At this time last year, the Braves were the underdogs, not expected to even make it to play at the championship, let alone win it.  Thus, when you look at the wins and losses too early in the season, it may be misleading at the end.

Will they be able to pull off the same feat this year?  Now that they have a target on their back as the reining champs, it only makes the other teams a little more motivated to steal that title away from them.  That's why you can never be too sure this early in the FCL season to know who will get their rings.

One look at the banners around the Charlotte Sports Complex is an indication that the Rays will not go down without a fright, and they're probably very determined to get another championship banner to add to their collection.  Of course, there's all the other teams to contend with as well.  It's not uncommon to have a last minute fight for the right to play in the championship, and don't discount the underdogs, as the Braves have shown us last year and are surely up for proving it to everyone once again this year.

It's more to watch the FCL, as all of the players are out to make a name for themselves.  They want you to know their name, and they want to be the next big superstar that everyone is talking about.  That's why you never know what might happen on the field, from an accidentally on purpose injury that nobody can ever prove, to jumps and slides that have the vigor of youth before any major injuries.

When you see the road rash from these guys sliding into base to try to entertain fans, you'll understand that baseball is not all peanuts and hot dogs.  The guys in the FCL are the ones willing to give it their all in the hopes of moving up.  If you want to know who the next star will be, just watch a few games, and you can start to guess who is likely to be known in the future; of course, just when you think you know, injuries happen unexpectedly and all sorts of things can happen in the off-season to put a kink in things.

The best thing to do is to pick your favorites early, when they are in the FCL, and you can know the happiness of when they advance, and the disappointment of when they get hurt.  That's what sucks fans into baseball, getting to know the players, having someone to cheer for.  The players on the FCL are just building their fanbase, hoping you become one who cheers for them, so support your favorites now.

Baseball Spotlight: Jimmy González - Béisbol destacado: Jimmy González

Playing 14 seasons of baseball as a catcher, Jimmy González was a first-round pick of the Houston Astros back in 1991, playing for affiliates of the San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos, and New York Mets until 2004, ending his playing career at 31.  Starting over at 41, in 2014, he began managing affiliate teams with the Chicago Cubs.  Now, as the manager for the Florida Complex League Boston Red Sox, which he started in 2021 at 48-years-old, he talks about his baseball career.

Marisa:  I remember being in middle school and high school, watching the baseball players work out for their team, but being around the professional level, I see slightly different exercises that some of these guys do, such as using resistance bands. For example, should they be focusing on exclusively on strength training, running a few miles each day, flexibility with stretching, or a combination of different techniques?

Jimmy:  The game has changed over the years and so have the workouts the players do. All organizations have dedicated strength and conditioning staff that help the players on individualized routines based on their specific needs.

Marisa:  What are some of the challenges that foreign baseball players face when they come to America for the first time?

Marisa:  Can you describe the typical path someone might take to get to your level?

Jimmy:  Here in the USA, they play in high school and/or travel teams, and get recruited from there, either to play professionally or to go to play in college. If the route to play in college was chosen, then they can also be recruited from there.

Marisa:  I was reading that some positions in baseball almost prefer certain body types, but it looks like pitchers seem to be an exception to this rule lately. I have seen a wide range of body types in pitchers, from tall and lanky to short and squatty, very wiry to those built like a brick house with lots of muscles, and everything in between. Would you agree with that?

Jimmy:  That can be true; however, if a player is a pitcher, and he is short but can throw with good velocity, then it doesn’t matter. I believe because of all of the new training methods, it doesn’t matter your body type. Many times, a tall pitcher can give a different perception, as he will release the ball closer to the hitter, and that can make a difference.

Jimmy:  The biggest one I see when players come from high school or college is when they call for the ball. They say, “ball, ball,” and in professional baseball, they say, “I got it,” several times. It takes them a little while to break that habit.

Jimmy:  As a player: I was told to play hard, and if you’re going to fail, to fail going one hundred percent.

As a coach: Be present and enjoy right now. Not where you want to be or hope to be, because it takes away from the enjoyment of the moment.

Marisa:  Do you have any advice for former players that may want to coach baseball?

Jimmy:  If that’s what you want to do, then pursue it. You have to love this game to be a coach, because it’s a commitment for sure.

Marisa:  As a former catcher, what have you learned from the game that you applied to your job as manager?

Jimmy:  I was always able to see the whole field and what everyone was doing and their positioning. I have to do that as a coach, and it happens naturally.

Marisa:  Being a minor league manager, what is your number one priority with this team and the players?

Jimmy:  Teach them how to be professionals in all aspects of the word, both on and off the field. Teach them the game from knowledge and experience.

Jimmy:  I try to keep a relaxed clubhouse. I have been in their shoes and know firsthand the difficulties that can come. If I can help them relax, so that they can play to their potential, then it’s definitely worth it.

There’s still a few more chances left to catch a game of the FCL Boston Red Sox before the season ends.  With the majority of their games in Fort Myers, on August 15, they will play FCL Pirates in Bradenton.  On August 17, the FCL Braves will host the FCL Red Sox at Cool Today Park in North Port, starting at noon.
