After being inspired by a professional athlete to push beyond my books and venture back into the realm of music and movies, I can look back and honestly say that little push has taken me further than expected. First of all, if someone would've told me in my 20's that I'd join professional sports in my 40's, I probably would've laughed at them, given the history with my cliff diving accident and all. Since I published more than 100 books, including screenplays, and have a couple decades of history in music and entertainment, it's not surprising that someone eventually nudged me to move forward to the next creative process level, but the way it happened, I'm honestly still scratching my head over, as it's not just the advent of joining sports, but the impact of Hurricane Ian and so much more combining to make these things possible.

The past few years have impacted me as much as the hurricane, being hit hard by an unexpected force that topples over everything you thought you knew. Yes, literally Hurricane Ian destroyed a portion of the first house I bought, and it literally ripped away half of my belongings, but the impact of sports on my life was equally powerful and unexpected. Let me explain that when I first applied, I didn't know I would even be working with professional sports athletes, so things were literally unexpected at best.

My first application was for fireworks, as my brother and uncle have always been into them and encouraged me to explore that avenue after I explained I was approached by a member of the Santore family. This person explained to me that there were no good books about pyrotechnics and thought I might be able to change that. Even though he talked to me about it, told me who to contact, I lost contact and forgot about it, until I stumbled across an ad online that said fireworks and a contact.

When I went in for an interview and training, they didn't mention where we would be working, just saying it was local. After training and a couple months for background clearance, I found out my first pyrotechnics gig would be at the then brand-new Atlanta Braves Spring Training facility in North Port. Little did I know then that I would soon be joining the team, literally being considered a team member.

It wasn't that first year, or the next year, but around the pandemic, I was searching for a new job. When I applied, again, I didn't know exactly what I was applying for, just saw they needed someone with English skills, which I had from teaching at Southern Technical College. That's how I joined the team.

In the "getting to know you" game, they learned about me, as I learned about them, and once they learned some of my history, they encouraged me.

The topic of books and movies came up, with some expressing that movies were more popular than books nowadays. One particular athlete encouraged me to move beyond my comfort zone to further myself. If I've written movies, why not start producing them for people to actually be able to watch?

About that time, someone approached me about doing a documentary about my books, since I had so many published. While they wanted a generic teacher-like documentary about writing, which would have been great, Hurricane Ian re-directed a lot of things. It spun things into an unexpected whirlwind.

In the morning, we thought we'd be able to leave to check on my house, but there were too many trees across the road for anyone to go anywhere. Grabbing any sharp objects, my father and I went to work hacking to clear the road, quickly being joined by neighbors with whatever tools they had to help. It's not a short process when people have power tools they can't use, working old school with small axes, hand saws and more, until someone finally showed up with a gas-powered trimmer that took a lot of time to make it through one branch, let alone a multitude of massive trees that couldn't be rolled.

Sweating, seeing all the destruction. led to the documentary including the hurricane, as opposed to only being about my books and writing. Having nothing but time, with not many businesses open, I went around filming whatever I thought was cool looking. Thus began the "Blow It Up" documentary.

People have moved on from the news headlines about Hurricane Ian and snottily ask, "are you guys still concerned about that hurricane down there after all of this time has passed?"

Amazingly, yes, as there's still buildings half destroyed, still boats that need to come out of the water that have been destroyed, and there's still a lot more that needs to be done down here. A former movie producer who gave me a chance as a guest director when I was still a student at Johns Hopkins University approached me about creating a film festival to make Florida great again. That's only one of the things happening behind the scenes currently, and we will see what comes of that in the near future.

What I do know is that documentary just opened the flood gates. With a trilogy I started in 2014, a friend approached me to be a horror character, creating a spin-off of my original book series. He wanted to be in the movie, so I started writing a screenplay, only to realize I could not afford to make it.

Upon request, we started planning out how we could film, as I was on one side of the country, and he was on the other, from extreme north to south. Unsure where to film, he stumbled across some horror conventions and encouraged me to get active in some. That's how we landed on Fantasm in Orlando.

The horror, paranormal and burlesque convention welcomed us with open arms, allowing us to put on performances where we could film impromptu using volunteers from the audience who wanted to be involved with the project. Getting a good amount of footage, we combined this with other filming we did on the fly in Michigan, the Dominican Republic, and Hollywood, CA. Everything was done on a zero budget, as we filmed in conjunction with our normal life plans, not having a budget for props, wardrobe, or anything, asking people to bring in what they had to work with, and it came together.

We would go to drum circles in Florida and film random shenanigans. When I'd go up to Michigan to visit family, we would try to film with whoever was around. On vacation, break out the camera and try to make a scene that will worth with the rest of the film, so it's a little disjointed at times.

To try to smooth that out, I made music to move the storyline forward. At first, all sorts of bands wanted to be involved, each hoping to get rich, but as they found I had no budget, they were not so gung-ho. That meant, being the writer, knowing what I wanted to say, I just found musicians and started to sing.

The songs were never created to be radio hits. They developed to move the movie forward. Still, people reacted to the music, as it was different, almost like a spoken word with minimal instruments, such as just a guitar or drums, created very low budget, giving it this backwoods sound that was perfectly twisted.

"Amputation Amongst Friends" garnered more than 1500 views its first week without advertising. I entered a few songs into film festivals, and they started winning awards. The music won awards before the film was even finished, being like teaser trailers for the "Demons Among Us" impromptu movie.

With new awards under my belt, my sports team did not forget about me. They put me in a new position in the press box, where I could play with all of their cameras and learn even more about directing. Under the direction of a new boss who had also made his own horror movie, he encouraged learning.

People don't think of athletes as teachers, but as I worked with them, they taught me the importance of strengthening my foreign language skills, including writing my blog in English and Spanish for ease of communication and to expand my readership (even if translation is not perfect).

Being part of a professional sports team taught me about team dynamics. Always keep striving for perfection, keep trying, and don't slack off, as someone is always willing to take your place. When you encourage others, they might just surprise you and encourage you back when you actually need it.

When others failed me, like my insurance company after the hurricane, it's surprising how that team mentality helped me make it through. So many others lost hope, especially with rising insurance prices that resulted in people being priced out of their homes, but I had a team that encouraged me. Individuals know what kind of an impact they had on my life, and I owe so much to those who helped me make it through, but it's the team mentality that people should be there to help each other when they need it.
